Seat Dispute Turns Fatal at Delhi's Shahdara Railway Station, Passenger Beaten to Death in General Coach Clash
A passenger was beaten to death following a dispute over a seat in an unreserved coach at Delhi's Shahdara railway station. Pankaj Dhama, a resident of Uttar Pradesh's Baghpat district, succumbed to severe internal injuries after a violent assault. Police have registered a case and are examining CCTV footage and viral videos to identify and arrest the accused.
The incident took place at Platform No. 3 of Shahdara railway station after the Yoga Express arrived at around 6:00 a.m. The deceased, identified as Pankaj Dhama, a resident of Baghpat in Uttar Pradesh, was among passengers attempting to board the Haridwar-bound train through the general compartment.
According to reports, an argument broke out near the coach entrance over seating arrangements. The dispute quickly turned violent and developed into a physical confrontation. Enraged passengers allegedly attacked Pankaj Dhama, knocked him to the ground and repeatedly kicked and punched him.

A video of the incident has surfaced on social media, showing personnel of the Railway Protection Force intervening to stop the fight. After the assault ended, the footage showed the victim lying on the platform floor. Uniformed personnel were seen dragging him away from the area near the train. However, the authenticity of the video could not be independently verified.
According to reports in Hindi media, the injured man was rushed to a hospital, where doctors declared him dead. Investigators are examining closed-circuit television footage from the railway station along with the viral video to identify the accused involved in the assault and ensure their arrest at the earliest.
After receiving information about the incident, a team from the Old Delhi Railway Police Station reached the spot. New Delhi Railway District Deputy Commissioner of Police Sachin Sharma reportedly told Aaj Tak that Pankaj Dhama was immediately shifted to Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital in critical condition, where doctors declared him dead.
According to the preliminary medical report, the deceased suffered severe internal injuries during the assault, which proved fatal. Police have registered a case under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, dealing with culpable homicide not amounting to murder, along with Section 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
The incident has once again highlighted serious concerns over overcrowding and passenger safety on Indian Railways, as investigators continue efforts to identify and arrest those responsible for the fatal attack that began with a dispute over a seat in a general coach.
