International Day of Yoga 2026: Indian Missions Worldwide Intensify Preparations as Global Participation Grows

Indian embassies and diplomatic missions across China, Japan, Oman and Nepal have intensified preparations for the 12th International Day of Yoga 2026, while the Russian Embassy in New Delhi hosted a special session. The theme, “Yoga for Healthy Ageing,” highlights the role of yoga in promoting active and healthy living worldwide

As the world prepares to mark the 12th International Day of Yoga on June 21, Indian embassies and diplomatic missions across several countries have intensified preparations through large-scale events and outreach programmes, drawing participation from thousands of yoga practitioners and enthusiasts worldwide. The celebrations reflect the expanding global appeal of yoga and reinforce its role as a practice promoting physical and mental well-being.

In China, the Indian Embassy in Beijing shared visuals from a Yoga Day event attended by scores of participants. In a message posted on X, the mission stated, “Mats rolled out, movement in flow, mindfulness in focus,” while showcasing glimpses of the celebrations organised ahead of the international observance.

The Indian Embassy in Japan announced that its Yoga Day celebrations will take place on Sunday at the Tsukiji Hongan-ji Temple. The mission invited residents to join the programme and experience the ancient practice that promotes harmony between the body, mind and soul.

In Oman, Indian Ambassador Prashant Pise invited members of the Indian community and friends of India to participate in the Yoga Day celebrations scheduled to be held at the embassy on Sunday.

Earlier on Saturday, the Indian Embassy in Nepal, in collaboration with the Lumbini Development Trust and the BP Koirala India-Nepal Foundation, organised a Yoga Day programme that witnessed the participation of senior officials and hundreds of yoga enthusiasts.

In India, the Russian Embassy in New Delhi hosted a yoga session ahead of the International Day of Yoga celebrations. A senior Russian diplomat highlighted the increasing popularity of yoga across Russia and noted its growing acceptance as an important wellness practice.

The United Nations proclaimed June 21 as the International Day of Yoga on December 11, 2014, following a proposal made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his address to the 69th session of the United Nations General Assembly on September 27, 2014.

Since the inaugural observance in 2015, India has spearheaded global Yoga Day celebrations under the aegis of the Ministry of AYUSH, with support from state governments, Indian missions abroad and United Nations agencies. The initiative has consistently promoted yoga as a means of holistic health and preventive healthcare.

The year 2026 marks the 12th edition of the International Day of Yoga. This year’s theme, “Yoga for Healthy Ageing,” highlights the role of yoga in helping individuals remain active, independent and engaged throughout different stages of life. With celebrations spanning continents and growing international participation, the annual observance continues to strengthen yoga’s position as a universal practice dedicated to health, harmony and well-being.
