Jamarani Dam Faces Funding Hurdle as Uttar Pradesh Yet to Release Rs 688.65 Crore Share
Construction of the Rs 3,808 crore Jamarani Dam near Haldwani faces uncertainty as Uttar Pradesh has not yet released its Rs 688.65 crore share. Despite ongoing meetings between irrigation departments, the delay threatens the progress of the project, which is expected to provide annual irrigation water to 684 villages and 47,607 hectares of farmland in Uttar Pradesh.
The Jamarani Dam is being constructed on the upper reaches of the Gaula River. Work on one diversion tunnel required for the main dam has already been completed, while construction of the second tunnel is in its final stage. After the monsoon season, the river flow will be diverted through the tunnels, allowing the foundation work of the main dam to begin. Simultaneously, reconstruction of canals aimed at supplying irrigation water to districts in both Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh is progressing at a rapid pace.
According to the project arrangement, Uttar Pradesh is scheduled to receive 238 million cubic metres of irrigation water annually from the dam. However, the state has yet to release its share of the financial contribution. Irrigation departments of both states have been holding continuous meetings to resolve the issue, but the pending funds have not been received so far.
The Jamarani Dam is being built at a total cost of Rs 3,808 crore. Of this amount, the Central Government is contributing Rs 2,584.10 crore, while Uttarakhand is spending Rs 1,432.40 crore. The remaining amount is to be provided by Uttar Pradesh.
The project is expected to supply irrigation water to Rampur and Bareilly districts of Uttar Pradesh, benefiting 47,607 hectares of agricultural land spread across 684 villages. Officials have stated that Uttar Pradesh must release its share of Rs 688.65 crore for the construction of the dam, and discussions at the departmental level are continuing to ensure the funds are provided.
The Jamarani Dam is considered a crucial irrigation project for both Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh. Any delay in the release of funds could affect the pace of construction and the timely delivery of irrigation benefits to thousands of farmers and hundreds of villages dependent on the project.
