AI Summit Handshake Controversy: Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei Dismisses Viral Speculation, Calls Event Disorganized
A viral moment at the India AI Impact Summit involving Anthropic Chief Executive Officer Dario Amodei and OpenAI Chief Executive Officer Sam Altman sparked speculation over tensions between the two Artificial Intelligence leaders. Amodei dismissed the claims, blamed disorganized event management, and reflected on his departure from OpenAI and differences over trust and values.
Speaking to Bloomberg, Amodei described the summit as "extremely disorganized" and said the incident had little to do with corporate competition. He explained that participants were brought on stage at the last minute and that organizers repeatedly changed the order in which they were positioned before directing everyone to hold hands for the photograph.
"The summit was extremely disorganized. We all came up at the last minute and they changed the order in which we were standing, and then they took a picture of us and then they ordered us all to hold hands," Amodei said.
He clarified that his remarks were not aimed specifically at India and noted that many major international gatherings involving heads of government often become chaotic behind the scenes. Recalling the moment, he said Prime Minister Narendra Modi was present on the stage when instructions for the group photograph were being issued.
"There was Narendra Modi up there suddenly telling everyone to hold hands and pose for the group photograph," Amodei said.
The comments came amid continued interest in the competition between Anthropic and OpenAI, two of the most closely watched companies in the global Artificial Intelligence race. Amodei founded Anthropic in 2021 along with his sister, Daniela Amodei, and several former OpenAI employees after leaving the company.
Anthropic has since emerged as one of OpenAI's strongest competitors and has built its identity around Artificial Intelligence safety and responsible development. During the interview with Bloomberg, Amodei also reflected on his departure from OpenAI and said disagreements over Artificial Intelligence safety were not the only factor behind his decision.
He said concerns about honesty, values and organizational conduct eventually made it impossible for him to continue working at the company.
"When you feel that you can't trust someone, when you feel that their values are not what they say they are, when you feel that they are not honest, that makes it very hard to continue to work with a company," Amodei said.
Questioning the need to remain in an organization without a shared vision, he said it was better to leave after observing repeated signs of dishonesty and unusual behavior.
"Why do you have to work with someone when you do not have the same vision? It is always better to step out when you see several signs of dishonesty and weird behavior," he said.
Amodei said he has no regrets about leaving OpenAI and reiterated that continuing a professional relationship without trust and a common vision made little sense. His remarks have once again drawn attention to the intensifying competition and philosophical differences shaping the future of the Artificial Intelligence industry.
