Delhi Braces for Thunderstorms and Gusty Winds as Monsoon Advances Across Eastern and Central India
Delhi is expected to witness thunderstorms, light rainfall and strong winds, offering relief from intense heat. The India Meteorological Department has also forecast further advancement of the southwest monsoon across eastern and central India, while heavy rainfall warnings and heatwave conditions continue to affect several regions, creating contrasting weather patterns across the country.
According to the India Meteorological Department, wind speeds are expected to increase during the forenoon and afternoon hours, with gusts reaching 40 to 50 kilometres per hour and occasionally touching 60 kilometres per hour, raising the possibility of intense thunderstorm activity.
The weather department said conditions remain favourable for the further advance of the southwest monsoon over parts of Telangana, Odisha, Jharkhand, Bihar and Chhattisgarh during the next four to five days. At present, the northern limit of the monsoon passes through parts of Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Jharkhand and Bihar.
Widespread rainfall activity is expected across Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh and Himachal Pradesh through the weekend. Isolated heavy rainfall is likely over the western Himalayan region, while thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds are forecast over Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh. Isolated dust storm activity is also likely over Rajasthan.
The India Meteorological Department has issued heavy to very heavy rainfall warnings for isolated locations in Assam and Meghalaya and in West Bengal and Sikkim. Heavy rainfall is also likely over Arunachal Pradesh, Bihar, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura and the Tamil Nadu regions of Puducherry and Karaikal.
Eastern India is expected to witness active weather conditions, with Odisha, Jharkhand and Bihar likely to experience thunderstorms, lightning and squally winds. Some areas may record wind speeds of up to 80 kilometres per hour. Fairly widespread rainfall has also been forecast over the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
The Konkan and Goa region, Maharashtra and parts of Gujarat are likely to receive scattered to fairly widespread rainfall during the coming days. Across southern India, widespread rain and thunderstorm activity is expected over Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. Isolated heavy rainfall is likely over Tamil Nadu, Kerala and coastal Karnataka.
Meanwhile, heatwave conditions are expected to persist at isolated places in eastern Uttar Pradesh until June 24. Parts of Maharashtra and Telangana are also likely to witness heatwave conditions on Thursday. Hot and humid weather is forecast over coastal Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, West Bengal, Konkan and Goa.
The latest forecast highlights a sharp contrast in weather conditions across the country, with several regions preparing for heavy rain and severe thunderstorms even as heatwave conditions continue to grip parts of northern and central India. The advancing southwest monsoon is expected to bring significant changes to weather patterns in the coming days, affecting multiple states with varying degrees of rainfall, strong winds and temperature extremes.
