Just over a month after the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam secured a surprise victory in the May 2026 Assembly elections, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay attended the opening session of the 17th Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, marking a significant political milestone in the state. Supporters gathered in large numbers and greeted the Chief Minister enthusiastically as he arrived for the inaugural session.

Governor Arlekar delivered the policy address and praised the new administration for implementing a series of measures within weeks of assuming office. The Governor highlighted the closure of 717 liquor outlets located near educational institutions and places of worship, describing the move as one of the government's early actions aimed at social reform.

The address also underscored the establishment of dedicated anti-narcotics forces and the administration's efforts to curb the illicit liquor trade. In addition, the Governor referred to measures undertaken to address the state's debt burden and strengthen fiscal management.

Supporters of the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam described the developments as a historic transformation in Tamil Nadu's political landscape. Opposition parties, however, voiced criticism over the new government's policies and decisions.
