Shravasti Police Arrest Accused in Rape Case Linked to False Marriage Promise and Blackmail Threats
Shravasti Police achieved a major success in their campaign against crimes targeting women by arresting a wanted accused charged with rape on the false promise of marriage and threatening to circulate obscene photographs and videos. The arrest followed sustained efforts and reflects the administration's commitment to ensuring women's safety and swift legal action.
Acting under the directions of Superintendent of Police Rahul Bhati, law enforcement authorities have been carrying out intensive operations against criminals. As part of this drive, a police team led by Sonwa Police Station In-Charge Visundev Pandey acted on information received from an informer and arrested the wanted accused, Sajan alias Shamsher Ali, son of Nazar Mohammad, a resident of Salikabad under Nanpara Police Station in Bahraich district.
The accused was wanted in Case Crime Number 56/2026 registered at Sonwa Police Station under Sections 69 and 351(3) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The case surfaced on April 28, 2026, when a woman from a village in the Sonwa Police Station area lodged a complaint.
According to the complaint, Sajan alias Shamsher Ali established physical relations with the victim after promising to marry her. The accused later refused to marry and allegedly threatened the woman by warning that he would send obscene photographs and videos through mobile devices.
Following continuous efforts, Shravasti Police arrested the accused on June 17, 2026. He was apprehended near the Bhensri Canal Bridge, close to the Irrigation Department building in the Sonwa Police Station area. After the arrest, legal proceedings were initiated against the accused in accordance with the law.
Shravasti Police have maintained a vigilant and proactive approach toward crimes against women. Prompt action is being ensured in such cases in compliance with directives related to women's grievance hearings and instructions issued by the Women's Commission. Authorities stated that the objective is to reinforce public confidence among women and ensure their safety. The latest action by Shravasti Police is being viewed as a significant step toward strengthening security and justice for women.
