Mumbai Heatwave Forces Slum Families to Take Shelter on Versova Beach Amid Severe Power Cuts
Mumbai’s ongoing heatwave has forced dozens of slum families to sleep overnight on Versova Beach, seeking relief from 35°C days, 30°C nights, humidity and power cuts. Tin-roof shanty residents are worst affected as high-rises surround the coastline, with images from June 17 and 19 showing the situation ahead of expected rains on June 21.
Residents from tin-roof shanties are among the worst affected, forced to endure extreme indoor heat before moving to the open beach at night in search of cooler conditions. They return to their settlements at dawn as the city resumes its daily rhythm, while high-rise buildings stand in stark contrast along the nearby coastline.
Photographs and video footage captured on June 17 and June 19 document these scenes unfolding along the beach, reflecting the scale of hardship faced by vulnerable communities during the ongoing weather crisis. The same stretch of Versova Beach has also been noted for its maintained cleanliness, attributed to the sustained efforts of activist Afroz Shah.
With meteorological forecasts indicating the arrival of rains by June 21, the situation remains a stark reminder of the pressure extreme weather places on urban populations already living in precarious conditions.
