CBSE Re-Evaluation Portal Faces Massive Cyberattack Attempts Hours After Launch

CBSE’s newly launched Class 12 verification and re-evaluation portal faced major cyberattack attempts within hours of going live. The board reported nearly 1.5 million hits in two minutes and over 100,000 unauthorised file-access attempts, while assuring students that the platform remains operational and secure.

NEW DELHI: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) on Tuesday reported a series of cyber threats targeting its newly launched Class 12 verification and re-evaluation portal, only hours after the platform became operational for students across the country.

According to the board, the portal came under an intense wave of malicious activity, including an apparent denial-of-service attack aimed at disrupting access for students seeking verification of marks and re-evaluation of answer books. CBSE revealed that the platform received nearly 1.5 million hits within a span of just two minutes, overwhelming the system in what officials described as a coordinated attempt to interrupt services.

The board also detected more than 100,000 attempts to gain unauthorised access to files hosted on the platform. CBSE attributed these activities to malicious actors attempting to compromise the system and disrupt its functioning at a critical time when thousands of students were accessing the portal.

In an official statement, CBSE said that while a large number of students successfully used the re-evaluation portal, malicious actors simultaneously launched cyberattacks against the platform. The board stated that the most recent incident involved a denial-of-service attack attempt that generated approximately 1.5 million hits within two minutes, along with more than 100,000 unauthorised file-access attempts.

Despite the cyber threats, CBSE confirmed that the portal remains fully operational. The board stated that several refinements have been introduced based on feedback received from students. Among the key improvements are extended session time limits designed to make the submission process more convenient, efficient, and seamless for users.

The portal was launched one day later than originally scheduled. According to a board official, the delay was caused by technical issues. The postponement had sparked concerns among students and parents, particularly following reports of glitches during the answer-sheet access process earlier this month.

CBSE had previously maintained that the portal was being introduced to ensure a transparent and seamless mechanism for students seeking verification of marks and re-evaluation of answer books. The initiative forms part of the board’s broader efforts to improve accessibility and transparency in the post-examination review process.

The launch also coincides with CBSE’s intensified efforts to strengthen cybersecurity protections surrounding the OnMark portal operated by its service provider. On Sunday, the board announced that a team of cybersecurity experts from various government agencies and the Indian Institutes of Technology had been deployed to reinforce the platform’s security infrastructure and safeguard it against potential cyber threats.

The incident highlights the growing cybersecurity challenges faced by major educational platforms handling large-scale student services. While the attacks failed to bring the portal offline, the volume and sophistication of the attempted intrusions underscore the importance of robust digital security measures as thousands of students continue to rely on online systems for critical academic processes.
