Union Minister Launches Swachha App to Strengthen Sanitation Monitoring in West Bengal Under Swachh Bharat Review
Union Minister Manohar Lal Khattar launched the Swachha App during a Swachh Bharat Mission review in West Bengal, enabling citizens to report unclean areas with geo-tagged photos in Bengali, Hindi, and English. The app ensures two-hour municipal response, begins in ten municipalities, and supports wider cleanliness reforms including dustbin placement and anti-littering campaigns.
The newly introduced Swachha App enables citizens to report unclean locations by uploading geo-tagged photographs. The platform supports submissions in Bengali, Hindi, and English, ensuring wider accessibility across linguistic groups. Officials have confirmed that municipal authorities are expected to respond to reported complaints within two hours, with the initiative initially being implemented across ten municipalities.
The initiative forms part of the broader national cleanliness drive and introduces a structured monitoring mechanism aimed at rapid grievance redressal. As part of the rollout strategy, authorities have also proposed the installation of dustbins at intervals of every 100 meters to reduce open waste disposal.
In addition, an awareness campaign against littering is scheduled to be conducted ahead of the enforcement of fines, which are set to begin on September 1. The campaign is intended to encourage behavioral change before strict penal action is implemented.
Early users of the Swachha App have reported positive feedback, particularly highlighting its simple interface and real-time tracking features that allow users to monitor the status of their complaints efficiently.
The initiative is positioned as a coordinated effort between administrative authorities and urban local bodies to improve sanitation outcomes, strengthen accountability, and enhance civic participation in cleanliness governance across selected regions of West Bengal.
