Myanmar Assures India on Security Cooperation as Prime Minister Modi Holds Wide-Ranging Talks with President U Min Aung Hlaing

Myanmar President U Min Aung Hlaing assured Prime Minister Narendra Modi that Myanmar's territory would not be used against India's security interests during high-level talks in New Delhi. The leaders discussed defence, trade, border management, technology, peace efforts in Myanmar and broader regional cooperation, reaffirming their commitment to stability and strategic partnership.

India and Myanmar reinforced their strategic partnership on Monday as Myanmar President U Min Aung Hlaing assured Prime Minister Narendra Modi that Myanmar's territory would not be allowed to be used for activities detrimental to India's security interests. The assurance came during extensive bilateral talks in New Delhi that covered a broad range of issues critical to regional stability and cooperation.

The high-level discussions focused on strengthening ties across multiple sectors, including trade, investment, defence cooperation, border management, development assistance, energy, healthcare, education and emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence. Both leaders reviewed the progress of bilateral relations and explored opportunities to deepen cooperation in areas of mutual interest.

Briefing reporters after the meeting, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri stated that both countries reaffirmed the importance of preventing the misuse of their sovereign territories against each other's security interests. He said President U Min Aung Hlaing specifically reiterated Myanmar's commitment to ensuring that its territory would not be used for activities that could threaten India's security.

Myanmar shares a 1,640-kilometre border with India and remains a strategically significant neighbour, particularly for the northeastern states of Nagaland and Manipur. The security dimension of the relationship has gained increasing importance amid regional challenges and cross-border concerns.
