Bangalore Watch Company Unveils World's First Watch Crafted from Captured Atmospheric Carbon

Bangalore Watch Company has launched Peninsula Carbon, the world’s first luxury watch crafted from captured atmospheric carbon. Featuring the proprietary ReforgeCarbon material, a unique Air Quality Index-inspired dial, Swiss automatic movement, and a limited production of 100 pieces, the watch highlights the environmental impact of modern urban living through innovative design and engineering.

Bangalore Watch Company has introduced Peninsula Carbon, a pioneering timepiece made using captured carbon from the atmosphere, marking the first time any watchmaker has utilized carbon capture technology to create a luxury watch. The launch aims to highlight the carbon consequences of modern urban lifestyles through a high-quality wearable artifact.

The new watch is part of the brand’s Peninsula collection, which was originally launched in 2025 to celebrate natural landscapes such as mountains, oceans, and forests. With Peninsula Carbon, the focus shifts toward urban environments and their environmental impact.

Speaking about the launch, Mercy Amalraj, Co-Founder of Bangalore Watch Company, said that while the Peninsula collection initially celebrated nature, the latest edition focuses on cities, which house a small portion of the global population but account for a significant share of carbon emissions. She described the watch as a reminder of the environmental realities associated with urban development.

For the project, the company developed a proprietary material called ReforgeCarbon. Each dial is created by compressing carbon fibers and recovered carbon black under high pressure, resulting in a lightweight, durable, and visually distinctive material that differs from conventional carbon fiber composites.

Recovered carbon black is produced by processing industrial waste and byproducts that would otherwise be burned and released into the atmosphere. Tejas Sidnal, Chief Executive Officer and Founder of CarbonCraft, the Bengaluru-based material science company that collaborated on the project, said the initiative demonstrates the potential of advanced materials to transform waste-derived carbon into valuable products.

Nirupesh Joshi, Co-Founder of Bangalore Watch Company, said cities have become the engines of economic growth and human ambition, with carbon emissions emerging as one of their most significant consequences. He stated that Peninsula Carbon begins with that reality and serves as a cultural statement rather than a sustainability argument, transforming actual particulate matter into a precision-engineered object.

One of the watch’s most distinctive features is the replacement of the traditional minute track with a mock Air Quality Index meter. The scale progresses from 50 in green to 500 in deep red, symbolizing varying levels of air quality and environmental impact.

The Peninsula Carbon is constructed from 316L surgical-grade stainless steel and is fitted with a super-domed, scratch-resistant sapphire crystal. The watch is designed to withstand water resistance up to 200 meters. Powering the timepiece is a Swiss-made automatic movement that is regulated and tested to high standards at the company’s watchmaking workshop in Bengaluru.

The watch is being released in a single configuration as a limited edition of only 100 pieces. Due to the manufacturing process used to create the dial material, each watch features a unique dial structure, ensuring that no two pieces are identical. Every watch is individually numbered.

Priced at INR 2,83,000, the Peninsula Carbon became available for orders beginning May 26, 2026, through the company’s official sales channels.

Founded in 2018, Bangalore Watch Company specializes in high-quality mechanical watches inspired by contemporary Indian achievements and narratives. Its collections draw themes from aviation, cricket, space exploration, and the natural environment, presenting modern stories that extend beyond traditional stereotypes.

The company has established a reputation for innovation through several industry-first achievements, including watches created from recovered fighter aircraft and aircraft carrier materials, India’s first watch qualified for spaceflight, and the development of Cerasteel, a proprietary material combining steel and ceramic. The brand has received recognition from international publications for its originality, craftsmanship, and storytelling approach.

Founded by husband-and-wife team Nirupesh Joshi and Mercy Amalraj, who left technology careers overseas to pursue modern Indian storytelling through watchmaking, the company has built a dedicated customer base spanning more than 30 countries.

The launch of Peninsula Carbon represents a significant milestone in both watchmaking and material innovation, demonstrating how advanced engineering and environmental consciousness can be combined to create a unique luxury product that reflects the challenges of contemporary urban life.
