ndia’s Selection Committee Sets 2027 World Cup Blueprint as Afghanistan Series Squad Decisions Loom

India’s selection committee, led by Ajit Agarkar, is set to finalize squads for the Afghanistan series while focusing on the 2027 ODI World Cup roadmap. Key discussions include Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s ODI future, Ravindra Jadeja’s role, Hardik Pandya’s workload, and Nitish Kumar Reddy’s rising prospects in India’s long-term planning strategy.

The senior selection committee led by Ajit Agarkar is set to meet on May 19 to finalize India’s squad for the One Day International and the only Test match series against Afghanistan. However, the meeting is expected to extend far beyond routine squad selection, with the primary focus shifting toward building a long-term roadmap for the 2027 ODI World Cup and shaping the future structure of the Indian team.

The management is now reportedly prioritizing players who can remain consistent members of the squad until the next World Cup. Greater emphasis will be placed on fitness, current form, and long-term strategic planning. These selection principles are expected to be clearly reflected in the squad for the India versus Afghanistan ODI series scheduled to begin on June 14, where Shubman Gill is expected to lead the team as captain.

A major talking point in the meeting is expected to be the future of senior players Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in ODI cricket. The team management aims to end ongoing speculation regarding their roles by taking a clear stance during the Afghanistan series selection process. Selectors have already made it clear that fitness standards will remain non-negotiable, and no compromises will be made in this regard.

Selection will no longer be based solely on fitness, but also on a player’s overall value to the team, including match-winning contributions and tactical utility. If a player is not seen as essential to the team’s balance, their position will not be guaranteed.

All-rounder Ravindra Jadeja’s place in the squad is also expected to be a subject of serious discussion. Despite receiving strong backing from several quarters, his long-term role in the 2027 World Cup plans will depend on performance levels that exceed current expectations.

Virat Kohli’s position in the squad is currently considered secure. His strong performances in the IPL 2026 season have reportedly removed any doubts regarding his place in the team structure. The management views him as a key part of the 2027 World Cup planning framework, and no immediate questions are being raised about his inclusion.

In contrast, Hardik Pandya’s bowling workload is expected to be reviewed closely. While he has been regularly bowling in the IPL, he has not featured in an ODI since March 2025. The management is keen to determine how best to utilize him in the 50-over format going forward, particularly in terms of workload management and role clarity.

Young all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy is also emerging as a significant point of discussion. The team management is reportedly impressed with his improved bowling performances in IPL 2026. He may be considered not only for the upcoming Afghanistan series but also for future assignments, including tours to Ireland and England.

As India’s selection committee prepares to finalize the squad, the meeting is set to serve as a crucial step in defining the direction of Indian cricket over the next World Cup cycle, with long-term vision now taking priority over short-term selection needs.
