Nikhil Kamath and Martin Escobari Explore Leadership, Resilience and Entrepreneurship in an Era of Global Uncertainty

Nikhil Kamath and General Atlantic Co-President Martin Escobari discuss leadership, resilience, entrepreneurship, artificial intelligence, healthcare transformation and global uncertainty on the latest episode of People by WTF. The conversation features Columbia University students and leading entrepreneurs examining the future of innovation and leadership.

In the latest episode of People by WTF, Nikhil Kamath hosted Martin Escobari, Co-President of General Atlantic, alongside a group of Columbia University students for an extensive discussion on resilience, leadership, entrepreneurship and navigating an increasingly uncertain global landscape.

The conversation began with a thought-provoking question posed to the students: “What are you afraid of?” Their responses reflected concerns about climate change, inequality, the decline of moral leadership and growing global fragmentation. Setting the tone for the discussion, Kamath reflected on a world facing geopolitical conflicts, economic disruption and shifting global dynamics, emphasizing the need for a generation capable of adapting and succeeding amid uncertainty.

Drawing from his experience of growing up in Bolivia during a period of hyperinflation and political instability, Escobari shared insights that have shaped his leadership philosophy. He stressed the importance of being able to think and act simultaneously, particularly during periods of disruption when leaders cannot afford to wait for complete information before making critical decisions.

The discussion also examined the qualities that distinguish enduring entrepreneurs. Escobari argued that long-term success is often determined less by access to resources and more by resilience developed through adversity. He introduced the concept of “spearfishing,” a framework he developed after studying entrepreneurs who achieved success during periods of economic turmoil. According to Escobari, transformative opportunities frequently emerge at moments of maximum uncertainty, requiring founders to remain prepared, disciplined and decisive.

Kamath and Escobari further explored India’s entrepreneurial ecosystem and the country’s potential to build globally influential companies. Escobari underscored the importance of strong founder role models and suggested that India’s vast domestic market can sometimes reduce the urgency for businesses to become globally competitive from the outset.

Adding a younger perspective to the discussion, Aryan Sharma, a 21-year-old artificial intelligence entrepreneur from Mumbai who relocated to San Francisco after connecting with OpenAI Chief Executive Officer Sam Altman as a teenager, spoke about the challenges confronting Generation Z founders. These challenges include social isolation, rapid technological transformation and the need for what Sharma described as “eight seconds of courage” to act decisively in uncertain circumstances.

Looking to the future, Escobari identified four transformative forces expected to shape the coming decade: artificial intelligence, healthcare transformation, the energy transition and the rise of consumers across the Global South. He described artificial intelligence as one of the most consequential technological developments of modern times and highlighted healthcare as one of the sectors likely to experience its most significant impact.

The episode also featured Florian Brand, Co-Founder of Atai Life Sciences, and Aniruddh Sharma, founder of Karma Global Enterprise. Their contributions expanded the discussion to include mental resilience, risk-taking, intuition and the importance of embracing failure as an essential component of the entrepreneurial journey.

Speaking during the episode, Nikhil Kamath said, “If I want the youth of India to change one thing, it is to stop thinking that changing their mind is some kind of hypocrisy.”

Martin Escobari added, “At the peak of the storm is where transformative opportunity exists. The leaders who succeed are those who can think and act simultaneously and have the courage to change their minds when the facts change.”

The discussion concluded with a reflection on leadership in a rapidly changing world, emphasizing adaptability, intellectual honesty and the willingness to challenge established systems as critical qualities for the next generation of entrepreneurs and innovators.
