Banerjee had gone to meet the family of party worker Sanju Karmakar, whom the Trinamool Congress claims was killed in alleged Bharatiya Janata Party supported post-election violence after the May 4 Assembly elections. The visit quickly escalated into chaos as a group of locals surrounded his convoy.
According to accounts from the scene, the mob tore Banerjee’s shirt and threw various objects at him while raising slogans translated as “Hail Lord Ram.” The situation intensified rapidly, prompting immediate intervention by security personnel.
Police forces escorted Abhishek Banerjee away from the location, ensuring his safety. Officials confirmed that he did not suffer any serious injuries during the incident.
Following the attack, Banerjee accused Bharatiya Janata Party supporters of orchestrating the violence and also cited a major security lapse during the visit. Despite the confrontation, he stated his intention to continue similar outreach programmes.
Representatives from the Bharatiya Janata Party, however, claimed that the incident reflected public anger over the Trinamool Congress’s past governance and actions. Meanwhile, opposition leaders strongly condemned the attack, describing it as evidence of violent political conduct linked to the Bharatiya Janata Party.
The incident further intensifies the already strained political atmosphere in West Bengal, highlighting ongoing tensions between rival parties in the post-election period.
