Trinamool Congress Faces Deepening Internal Revolt as Leadership Crisis Strengthens BJP’s Position in West Bengal

The Trinamool Congress is facing an escalating internal revolt following its electoral defeat in West Bengal. Deep divisions over leadership, challenges to Mamata Banerjee’s authority, and a growing rebellion within the legislative party have intensified the crisis, while the Bharatiya Janata Party appears positioned to benefit from a weakened and fractured opposition.

The Trinamool Congress appears trapped in a deepening political crisis following its recent electoral defeat in West Bengal, with internal dissent escalating rapidly and raising serious questions about the party’s future under Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s leadership.

The party, which governed the state for 15 years, has witnessed a dramatic unraveling since the election results were declared on May 5. In the immediate aftermath of the defeat, several party spokespersons were removed after publicly criticizing the leadership and attributing responsibility for the loss to party General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee, Mamata Banerjee’s nephew.

The turmoil has since intensified, culminating in a major rebellion within the party’s legislative wing. The appointment of the Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly has triggered a sharp division among party legislators. A significant section of the party’s 80 Members of the Legislative Assembly has reportedly rallied behind expelled leader Ritabrata Banerjee and wants him to assume the position of Leader of Opposition.

The development represents a direct challenge to Mamata Banerjee’s authority, as she has backed Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay for the post. The dispute has exposed deep fractures within the party and raised concerns about its ability to function as a united opposition force.

According to expelled leader Riju Datta, the rebel faction could move to establish itself as the “real” Trinamool Congress and seek recognition as the legitimate opposition group in the Assembly. In the event of a prolonged confrontation with Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee, the rebels may also attempt to claim control of the party symbol, setting the stage for a potentially damaging internal battle.

Signs of growing dissatisfaction within the organization became evident when more than 60 party legislators reportedly failed to attend a meeting convened by Mamata Banerjee at her residence on Sunday. The absence of such a large number of lawmakers has been widely interpreted as evidence of mounting resentment against both Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee.

While political observers had predicted that dissatisfied Trinamool Congress leaders might defect to the Bharatiya Janata Party, the ruling party has publicly stated that it is not interested in absorbing leaders from the Trinamool Congress. The Bharatiya Janata Party has emphasized that it does not want what it describes as the “Trinamoolisation” of its organization and has ruled out welcoming disgruntled leaders into its ranks.

Political analysts believe this strategy reflects a broader calculation. Rather than seeking the complete destruction of the Trinamool Congress, the Bharatiya Janata Party may benefit more from a divided and weakened opposition party struggling with internal conflict. Such a scenario would reduce the possibility of Mamata Banerjee orchestrating a political comeback while ensuring that the opposition remains fragmented.

The Bharatiya Janata Party is also seen as cautious about creating circumstances that could transform Mamata Banerjee into a political victim. If rebel leaders were to join the ruling party in large numbers, it could allow her to portray herself as having been betrayed during a period of political adversity. Instead, an internal struggle for control of the party and its symbol is viewed as more advantageous for the ruling party’s long-term political interests.

The continuing turmoil within the Trinamool Congress has also intensified competition for opposition space in West Bengal. The Indian National Congress is believed to view the Trinamool Congress’s electoral setback as an opportunity for revival. There is speculation that the Congress may hope to benefit from any large-scale departures from the Trinamool Congress, including the possible return of leaders who were once associated with the Congress before Mamata Banerjee founded her own party.

However, the Bharatiya Janata Party is believed to prefer retaining the Trinamool Congress as the principal opposition force, albeit in a weakened and symbolic form, rather than allowing the Congress or Left parties to regain significant political ground in the state.

For the ruling party, the most favorable outcome would be a prolonged internal struggle within the Trinamool Congress, with leaders openly criticizing Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee, diminishing their influence and potentially paving the way for a new leadership structure. Such a development would weaken the party from within rather than through external political pressure.

The crisis also carries national implications. Mamata Banerjee has long been regarded as a prominent figure within the opposition alliance and has never concealed her aspirations for a larger national role. However, the growing instability within her party threatens to reduce her political influence, both in West Bengal and within the broader opposition framework.

There has been discussion about Mamata Banerjee spending more time in New Delhi following the electoral setback in West Bengal. Yet the escalating conflict inside the Trinamool Congress is likely to keep her focused on managing the party’s internal challenges and retaining organizational control. As the rebellion gains momentum, her immediate political battle appears firmly rooted in West Bengal, leaving any broader national ambitions facing significant uncertainty.

The unfolding crisis marks one of the most serious challenges of Mamata Banerjee’s political career. With internal divisions widening, legislative unity under strain, and rival factions openly challenging the leadership, the Trinamool Congress faces a defining moment that could reshape the political landscape of West Bengal and alter the balance of power within the national opposition.
