Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay Orders Fast-Track Action in Crimes Against Women and Children
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay chaired a high-level review meeting and ordered swift police and legal action against crimes targeting women and children. The move follows a 52 per cent rise in POCSO cases in 2024 and mounting public outrage over the recent abduction and killing incident in Coimbatore, signalling the government’s zero-tolerance approach.
The directive comes amid growing public concern over the sharp rise in offences targeting women and minors across Tamil Nadu. Official data revealed that cases registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act surged by 52 per cent in 2024, reaching 6,969 cases. Crimes against women have also witnessed a significant increase, intensifying pressure on the administration to strengthen law enforcement and restore public confidence.
Public outrage further escalated following the abduction and killing incident reported in Coimbatore on May 23. The case triggered widespread concern over the safety of women and children, prompting the state government to prioritise urgent administrative and policing measures.
During the review meeting, Vijay emphasised the need for coordinated efforts among key government departments to strengthen prevention mechanisms and increase public awareness regarding crimes against women and children. Officials were directed to ensure faster legal procedures and effective implementation of protective measures aimed at safeguarding vulnerable groups.
The Chief Minister’s intervention is being viewed as one of the first major administrative directives since assuming office. By ordering immediate action and enhanced coordination among authorities, Vijay has sought to send a strong message that the state government will adopt a strict stance against offenders and work to rebuild public trust in the criminal justice system.
