India Faces Widespread Power Cuts as Extreme Heat Pushes Electricity Demand Beyond 270 GW

India is facing severe power cuts as record-breaking heat drives electricity demand beyond 270 GW amid an intense El Nino summer. Cities including Chennai, New Delhi, Noida, and parts of Odisha are witnessing prolonged outages, while authorities urge citizens to conserve electricity as the national grid faces mounting pressure.

India is battling mounting power shortages across several regions as an intense heatwave has driven electricity demand to a historic peak of more than 270 gigawatts, forcing authorities to appeal to citizens to reduce power consumption amid growing pressure on the national grid.

The ongoing El Nino weather pattern has triggered above-normal summer temperatures across the country in May, sharply increasing the use of cooling systems and intensifying strain on electricity infrastructure. In Chennai, one of India’s leading manufacturing and information technology centres, residents reported repeated power cuts during the night, with outages lasting between 40 minutes and one hour.

Residents in several parts of South Chennai said electricity disruptions had become frequent over the past two days, with repeated interruptions occurring at short intervals. The outages disrupted daily life and severely affected people working remotely from home during the extreme weather conditions.

According to national regulator Grid-India, the country’s peak power deficit late on Thursday evening stood at approximately 2.57 gigawatts, highlighting the widening gap between supply and rising demand.

In response to the growing crisis, the Power Ministry issued a public statement urging consumers to exercise restraint in electricity usage. The ministry stated that while preparations had been made to ensure adequate electricity supply, the severity of the summer conditions required citizens to use power carefully and responsibly.

The shortage has become particularly severe during evening hours when electricity generation depends heavily on thermal and hydropower sources. During daytime hours, part of the demand is supported by solar energy generation, but the absence of sufficient storage systems limits the availability of solar power after sunset.

Energy and environment experts warned that the unprecedented heat and rapidly rising electricity demand are exposing structural weaknesses in India’s power system. Disha Aggarwal, Senior Programme Lead at the Council on Energy, Environment and Water, stated that increasingly hotter nights are placing additional stress on electricity networks. She stressed the urgent need for India to accelerate the commissioning of battery storage systems capable of storing surplus solar energy for use during nighttime demand peaks.

Weather authorities have forecast “heatwave to severe heatwave conditions” from Friday through May 27 across New Delhi and large parts of northern and eastern India, raising concerns that electricity demand could rise even further in the coming days.

Several residents of New Delhi and neighbouring Noida used social media platform X to report nighttime power outages and prolonged electricity disruptions during the severe heat conditions.

In Odisha, residents and local media reports indicated growing public anger over extended power cuts affecting multiple areas during both daytime and nighttime hours. Some residents reportedly staged protests against the worsening electricity supply situation as temperatures continued to soar.

The combination of record-breaking heat, rising nighttime temperatures, and surging electricity demand has emerged as a major challenge for India’s power infrastructure, exposing the urgent need for stronger energy storage capacity and more resilient electricity distribution systems during extreme climate conditions.
