Devendra Fadnavis Travels on Vande Bharat Express to Shirdi Amid Fuel Conservation Appeal and Major Defence Inauguration

Devendra Fadnavis traveled aboard the Mumbai-Shirdi Vande Bharat Express covering 343 km in 5 hours 10 minutes to attend inauguration of a ₹3,000 crore defence manufacturing complex by NIBE Group led by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, amid fuel conservation appeal by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and rising oil prices, drawing public praise and debate over optics.

Devendra Fadnavis on Saturday undertook a high-speed journey aboard the Mumbai–Shirdi Vande Bharat Express, covering a distance of 343 kilometres in five hours and ten minutes to attend the inauguration of a ₹3,000 crore defence manufacturing complex developed by the NIBE Group.

The high-profile visit coincided with a significant industrial milestone led by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, who formally inaugurated the facility. The complex is designed to strengthen India’s defence manufacturing ecosystem and will produce artillery shells, guided missiles, suicide drones, and rocket launchers. The project is positioned as a key initiative aimed at enhancing national self-reliance in defence production while also generating employment opportunities.

The journey also came in the context of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appeal issued on May 10, urging citizens to increasingly adopt public transport in response to rising global oil prices driven by tensions in West Asia. Fadnavis responded to the appeal by choosing the Vande Bharat Express for his travel and later shared photographs of the journey on social media platforms.

His decision drew widespread public attention, with sections of observers praising the move as an example of leadership aligned with the fuel conservation message. However, it also sparked debate among critics who questioned the political optics surrounding the gesture.
