US Secretary of State Marco Rubio Meets Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Delhi, Extends White House Invitation

The meeting between Rubio and Prime Minister Modi marked a significant diplomatic engagement, with the two leaders discussing key issues related to regional and global security. Following the discussions, Prime Minister Modi shared glimpses of the meeting, underscoring the importance of the bilateral dialogue and the shared commitment to addressing strategic concerns.

Rubio arrived in Kolkata earlier in the day, beginning his four-day official visit to India, which is his first trip to the country since assuming office last year. During his visit to Kolkata, he travelled to the Mother House, the headquarters of Saint Teresa's Missionaries of Charity, before departing for the national capital, Delhi.

The US Secretary of State is scheduled to hold further discussions with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Sunday. He will also participate in the Quad foreign ministers’ meeting in Delhi on Tuesday. In addition, his itinerary includes planned visits to Agra and Jaipur as part of the diplomatic tour.

Speaking ahead of his visit, Rubio stated on Friday, “There is a lot to work on with India; they are a great ally and partner. We do a lot of good work with them, so this is an important trip.”

According to officials, the discussions between the two sides are expected to include the ongoing US-Iran conflict and its economic repercussions, particularly its impact on global energy supplies, as well as recent tensions arising from United States tariff measures affecting India.

Rubio’s visit is being viewed as a high-level diplomatic effort aimed at strengthening bilateral relations, with both US President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi reportedly personally invested in maintaining strong momentum in US-India ties.
