1,360 Saplings Planted Across Three Acres in Karnataka to Boost Climate Resilience and Biodiversity

A large-scale plantation initiative in Karnataka’s Hanumanthapura village has led to the planting of 1,360 saplings across three acres to strengthen biodiversity, improve soil conservation, enhance climate resilience, and support sustainable rural livelihoods through a collaborative effort involving The Art of Living, Vyakti Vikas Kendra India, Dynapac Company, volunteers, and local communities.

In a major environmental restoration initiative along Karnataka’s NH-48 corridor, 1,360 saplings have been planted across three acres of land in Hanumanthapura village as part of a long-term effort to strengthen biodiversity, improve ecological balance, and enhance climate resilience.

The plantation drive was implemented by The Art of Living through Vyakti Vikas Kendra India with Corporate Social Responsibility support from Dynapac Company. The initiative brought together corporate employees, volunteers, and local residents in a coordinated environmental campaign focused on sustainable rural development and ecological restoration.

The project was designed as more than a one-time plantation activity. Organisers described it as a structured ecological intervention aimed at addressing the growing impact of climate change, rising temperatures, and environmental degradation affecting rural landscapes across India.

A total of 12 native and ecologically significant species were planted during the initiative. These included Neem, Arjuna, Bamboo, Tamarind, Mahua, Jackfruit, Karanja, Amla, Banyan, Audumbar, also known as Indian Fig, and Jamun varieties. The selected species were chosen for their ability to support soil conservation, groundwater retention, biodiversity enhancement, nutritional value, and long-term livelihood opportunities for rural communities.

According to project organisers, Karanja contributes to soil fertility through nitrogen fixation, while Arjuna supports soil and water conservation. Neem aids natural pest control and air purification, and Bamboo helps bind soil while also creating livelihood opportunities. Fruit-bearing species such as Mahua, Jamun, Tamarind, and Jackfruit are expected to provide nutritional and economic benefits to local residents over time.

The plantation activity was carried out after an assessment of soil suitability, water availability, and community participation in Hanumanthapura village. Employees of Dynapac Company actively participated alongside volunteers from Vyakti Vikas Kendra India and members of the local community.

The implementation process included site preparation, pit digging, soil enrichment through organic inputs, plantation using scientific spacing techniques, watering, and protective measures. Organisers also established regular monitoring and maintenance systems to improve sapling survival and ensure healthy growth.

Local volunteers and residents participated in environmental awareness activities focused on conservation and long-term protection of the plantation site. Community involvement was also aimed at preventing grazing-related damage and strengthening local accountability for maintaining the saplings.

The initiative is expected to generate significant environmental benefits, including increased green cover, improved biodiversity, better soil moisture retention, reduced soil erosion, and enhanced resilience against heat stress and changing climate conditions.

Officials associated with the project stated that the plantation drive has also strengthened awareness regarding environmental conservation while encouraging greater participation from youth and volunteers in ecological activities.

Several of the planted species are expected to create future livelihood opportunities due to their economic and nutritional value. Bamboo and Mahua, in particular, are likely to contribute to supplementary rural income in the coming years.

The project highlights how small-scale but strategically planned environmental interventions can contribute to long-term ecological restoration when supported through collaboration between non-governmental organisations, corporate entities, volunteers, and local communities.

The Art of Living stated that its broader environmental initiatives focus on large-scale afforestation, restoration of degraded and polluted water bodies, and promotion of natural farming practices aimed at improving soil health, strengthening livelihoods, and restoring ecosystems sustainably.
