India’s AMCA stealth fighter program achieves major breakthroughs in engine intake aerodynamics and IRST integration, enhancing stealth performance and engine efficiency. The DRDO-ADA-led development strengthens fifth-generation capabilities, targeting advanced global fighters and improving detection and survivability in contested environments.

India’s Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) program has achieved significant technical milestones after successfully passing several critical development phases, marking a major step forward in the country’s fifth-generation stealth fighter ambitions.

The Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA), operating under the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), has reported substantial progress in the aerodynamic design of stealth fighter engine inlets. The breakthrough focuses on optimizing intake geometry to preserve low-observability characteristics while maintaining high engine efficiency, a core requirement for advanced stealth platforms.

A key advancement in the program involves the integration of Infrared Search and Track (IRST) technology. This passive tracking system enables the aircraft to detect and track targets that evade radar detection. Since the system does not emit any radiation, it significantly enhances survivability in contested and electronic warfare environments. The IRST system is planned to be integrated into the nose section of the AMCA as part of an electro-optical targeting system, ensuring the aircraft’s radar cross-section remains uncompromised.

According to a report attributed to Aerospace Global News, findings published in the Journal of Aerospace Sciences and Technologies in February 2026 detail how engineers developed a new intake geometry specifically designed for modern stealth aircraft like the AMCA. The design aims to balance engine performance with stealth requirements by reducing radar visibility of engine compressor blades, which are typically highly reflective to radar waves.

One of the central challenges in stealth aircraft design is preventing radar exposure of compressor blades located within the engine. To address this, engineers employ serpentine or S-duct air intakes that curve inward, blocking direct radar line-of-sight to the engine face. While effective for stealth, these curved ducts introduce aerodynamic inefficiencies, airflow disturbances, and risks such as compressor stall, as well as increased vibration and structural fatigue due to inconsistent airflow.

To validate these designs, researchers combined advanced computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations with wind tunnel testing. The study, led by researchers R. Abilashini and Valliamai Somasundaram from ADA, evaluated modified intake configurations under transonic conditions. The results demonstrated an exceptional pressure recovery rate of approximately 98 percent, indicating that nearly all incoming airflow energy is preserved before reaching the engine. Such efficiency levels are considered highly advanced for curved intake systems, where each bend typically results in energy loss due to turbulence and friction.

The program also addresses challenges in wind tunnel testing of stealth configurations. Engineers typically use scaled aircraft models mounted on support structures known as sting mounts. However, these supports can interfere with airflow measurements behind the model, potentially affecting data accuracy and test outcomes.

The AMCA program has also established a core integration and testing center in Puttaparthi, Andhra Pradesh, further strengthening India’s indigenous advanced combat aircraft development ecosystem.

Strategically, the AMCA is being developed as a twin-engine, medium-weight stealth platform featuring internal weapons bays, advanced avionics, sensor fusion capabilities, and supercruise performance. The aircraft is designed to represent a significant technological leap over existing fighter jets such as the Rafale and Su-30MKI, while also aiming to compete with advanced fifth-generation platforms like the F-35 Lightning II and Su-57.

Reports suggest that the integrated IRST system may enable detection of stealth aircraft such as the F-35 and F-22 Raptor at operationally significant distances, offering a potential tactical advantage in scenarios where radar usage may be constrained or risky.

Notably, similar S-duct intake concepts are also being adopted by global aerospace manufacturers, including Lockheed Martin, reflecting the broader industry shift toward balancing stealth with aerodynamic efficiency.

The successful validation of these aerodynamic and sensor technologies provides strong technical reinforcement for the AMCA program, positioning it as a cornerstone of India’s future air combat capability and fifth-generation fighter development roadmap.
