Mumbai Crime Branch Arrests Three in West Bengal Firing Case; Bandra Stone-Pelting Violence Leads to 16 Arrests
Mumbai Crime Branch has arrested three accused linked to a West Bengal firing and bomb hurling case from Deonar, later handed over to Shibpur Police for investigation. In a separate incident, 16 individuals were arrested and two detained after violent stone-pelting during an anti-encroachment drive in Bandra, which left 15 police personnel injured, including serious fractures.
In the first development, the Mumbai Crime Branch Unit 6 arrested three accused on Saturday in connection with a firing and bomb hurling case registered in West Bengal. The accused, identified as Shamim Ahmed, Jamil Akhtar, and Aftab Anwar, were apprehended from the Deonar area of Mumbai during a coordinated operation conducted by the Crime Branch. Officials confirmed that the individuals are suspected to be the primary accused in the case.
Following their arrest, the accused were taken into custody by the Shibpur Police from Howrah, West Bengal, for further legal proceedings and investigation. Authorities stated that the case remains under active investigation as agencies continue to examine the broader network and circumstances surrounding the incident.
In a separate incident on Friday, Mumbai Police confirmed the arrest of 16 individuals and the detention of two others in connection with a violent stone-pelting episode in the Garib Nagar area of Bandra. The violence erupted following an anti-encroachment drive conducted near Bandra Railway Station (East) on Wednesday, which escalated into unrest and continued into Thursday.
According to police officials, the accused were involved in pelting stones and paver blocks at security personnel during the operation. The confrontation lasted for nearly an hour before law enforcement was able to bring the situation under control. The arrested individuals were produced before the Bandra Court earlier on Friday.
The violence resulted in injuries to 15 police personnel. Five officers sustained serious injuries, including one officer who suffered a fractured hand and another who sustained a broken nose, while ten others received minor injuries. Authorities confirmed that further legal action is being taken against multiple accused individuals, with interrogation processes still ongoing.
Police officials further stated that among the two individuals detained, one is directly accused of attacking police personnel during the incident. After completion of necessary procedural formalities, a formal arrest is expected to follow.
The twin incidents underscore ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement agencies in managing inter-state criminal activity and maintaining order during civic enforcement operations in densely populated urban zones.
