Indian Naval Ship INS Sunayna Docks in Colombo Under IOS SAGAR Mission, Strengthening Maritime Cooperation Across the Indian Ocean
Indian Naval Ship Sunayna arrived in Colombo under the IOS SAGAR initiative for a three-day visit, marking its seventh port call in the second deployment edition since April 2026. The visit includes multinational crew engagements, public outreach, and joint exercises, reinforcing maritime cooperation, regional security, and India’s Neighbourhood First policy across the Indian Ocean Region.
The Sri Lanka Navy stated that the vessel reached Colombo under the IOS SAGAR framework, which reflects sustained cooperation and coordinated maritime outreach between participating nations. The Indian Navy described IOS SAGAR as a strategic initiative focused on fostering security, stability, and inclusive growth across the region.
Under the current deployment, a single Indian Naval ship is operating in the southwestern Indian Ocean Region with a combined multinational crew comprising personnel from India and 16 friendly foreign countries. Officials noted that this marks the second edition of the deployment, with the ship undertaking its seventh port call since being flagged off from Mumbai in April 2026.
During its stay in Colombo, the multinational crew will participate in professional and cultural engagements, including media interactions that will highlight the objectives of the 2026 deployment. The visit also includes structured public outreach, with the ship scheduled to remain open to visitors during its harbour stay. Personnel from the Sri Lanka Navy, school children, and members of the Indian diaspora in Colombo are expected to visit the vessel.
Following the completion of the port visit, the ship is scheduled to depart on May 18. Upon departure, sailors from both navies will conduct a joint passage exercise with the Sri Lanka Navy, further reinforcing operational coordination and maritime interoperability.
The Indian mission in Sri Lanka described the visit as a continuation of the Indian Navy’s efforts to build “Bridges of Friendship,” underscoring sustained defence engagement and regional partnership.
The deployment of Indian Naval Ship Sunayna under IOS SAGAR stands as a significant demonstration of India’s Neighbourhood First policy and its continued commitment to ensuring peace, stability, and collective maritime security across the Indian Ocean Region.
