According to the protesting students, the issue was formally raised with the university administration four days earlier, on May 7, through a written memorandum. In the representation, the group demanded immediate inclusion of Punjabi language on all nameplates across the campus.
The students stated that they had granted the administration a two-day deadline to address their demand and ensure that Punjabi is prominently displayed on all signage. They further warned that failure to take corrective action within the stipulated timeframe would result in organized protest demonstrations.
Following what the students describe as inaction from the administration within the given period, the student body proceeded with the protest action on campus, marking several nameplates with black ink as a form of symbolic dissent.
The incident highlights rising tensions between student groups and the university administration over linguistic representation in official campus signage. The protest has brought renewed attention to the broader debate surrounding the status and visibility of regional languages in institutional spaces, particularly within higher education environments
