Viral Video of Children Handling Stranded Gangetic Dolphin in Bihar Sparks Outrage

A viral video from Chapra, Bihar shows children handling a stranded Gangetic dolphin, sparking public outrage and concerns over the protection of the endangered species. Experts warn that human interaction can harm the fragile aquatic mammal and threaten its survival.

A disturbing video from Chapra in Bihar has gone viral, showing children interacting with a live Gangetic dolphin after the animal reportedly became stranded near a riverbank. The footage has ignited widespread outrage and renewed concerns about the protection of the endangered species.

The viral video, circulated extensively on Instagram and other social media platforms, depicts several children touching and playing with the dolphin in shallow water while the animal appeared visibly distressed. Conservationists and wildlife experts have expressed alarm, warning that such treatment can seriously harm the fragile aquatic mammal.

The dolphin in question is a Gangetic dolphin, also known as the Ganges River dolphin, recognized as India’s national aquatic animal. The species is classified as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and receives protection under Indian wildlife conservation laws.

Wildlife experts report that the dolphin appeared to be struggling for breath after becoming trapped in shallow water near the riverbank. The children were seen handling the animal, seemingly unaware of the dangers posed to the distressed creature.

Gangetic dolphins possess highly sensitive skin and are extremely vulnerable outside their natural habitat. Even brief exposure to shallow water or excessive human contact can result in severe injuries, stress, or death.

The incident has drawn criticism over the lack of public awareness regarding endangered wildlife and the conservation of river ecosystems. With only an estimated 2,500 to 5,000 Gangetic dolphins remaining in the wild, conservationists warn that incidents like this significantly threaten the survival of the species.

Social media reactions highlighted public concern. One user stated, “Parents and elders need to educate children about animal abuse. This is heartbreaking. The dolphin is gasping for air and water. Too sad.” Another commented, “Compassion is one of the most important values a child can learn, yet many children grow up being taught that emotions are a weakness. In our society, being insensitive is often accepted, while being kind, emotional, or empathetic is wrongly seen as weak. This becomes even more visible with boys.” A third wrote, “No no no, it’s not acceptable. It’s a form of cruelty. Very sad.”

The viral incident underscores the urgent need for public education on wildlife protection and the ethical treatment of endangered species, emphasizing the fragility of the Gangetic dolphin and the critical importance of safeguarding India’s river ecosystems.
