Despite typically strong summer demand, trading activity has slowed significantly at the wholesale hub, one of Asia’s largest agricultural produce markets. Traders reported a steep fall in prices due to reduced buying interest, although market officials have disputed the extent of the decline. Fruit Market Director Sanjay Pansare stated that wholesale prices have largely remained stable between ₹18 and ₹20 per kilogram and emphasized that there is no confirmed evidence linking watermelon consumption to the fatalities.
The incident that triggered widespread concern occurred in Mumbai’s JJ Marg area on April 25. According to police, nine members of a family, including five visiting relatives, had dinner at approximately 10:30 pm, which included chicken pulao. After the meal, the visiting relatives left the residence.
Between 1:00 am and 1:30 am, four family members—Abdullah, 40, his wife Nasrin, 35, and their daughters Ayesha, 16, and Zainab, 13—consumed watermelon. By early morning, between 5:30 am and 6:00 am, all four developed severe symptoms, including vomiting and diarrhea.
The family initially sought treatment from a local doctor before being shifted to Sir JJ Hospital for advanced medical care. The younger daughter succumbed at 10:15 am, followed by Abdullah later that night. The remaining two victims also died while undergoing treatment.
Authorities have conducted post-mortem examinations, but the final medical opinion remains pending. Efforts to trace the exact source of the suspected food item have so far yielded no conclusive results. Officials from the Food and Drug Administration conducted inspections in the Pydhonie area but were unable to identify any vendor selling watermelon in the locality.
An official noted that if the fruit had been purchased locally, additional cases would likely have emerged, yet no similar incidents have been reported. Police have registered a case of accidental death and confirmed that the investigation is ongoing.
The incident has triggered caution among consumers and traders alike, impacting market dynamics despite the absence of confirmed scientific or medical linkage. The final findings of the medical investigation are expected to play a critical role in determining the cause of the deaths and restoring public confidence.
