The incident took place on Ram Mandir Road in Goregaon (West), where the accused, identified as Fahad Khalil Samshuddin Shaikh, used petrol to trace the number “33” on the road and ignited it, creating a burning display on a busy public street.
In a video that later surfaced, the accused was also seen calmly entering his car and driving away, leaving the flames burning on the public road. Authorities stated that the act posed a serious risk to pedestrians and nearby property in a densely populated urban area.
According to the First Information Report registered at the Goregaon Police Station, the matter came to light after a complaint was received on April 25 at 11:10 pm through the official X handle of the Mumbai Police Commissioner. The complaint flagged a video showing the fiery birthday stunt.
A beat marshal along with a police team immediately reached the location and initiated an investigation. Officials later confirmed that the incident had occurred earlier the same day at approximately 12:05 pm on Ram Mandir Road.
Fahad Khalil Samshuddin Shaikh, identified as a local resident and car dealer, was subsequently taken into custody. A case was registered against him under Sections 287 and 125 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, pertaining to negligent conduct involving fire and acts endangering human life and personal safety.
The incident has sparked widespread concern on social media, with users condemning the reckless act carried out for online attention. The use of petrol in a public space raised alarm over the potential for uncontrollable fire spread and severe harm in a crowded locality.
The case highlights the growing risks of dangerous social media trends where viral content creation is prioritized over public safety, resulting in strict legal consequences.
