Kolkata’s Kalighat Witnesses Political Tension as Suvendu Adhikari Faces Confrontation During Final Phase of West Bengal Polling
Tensions flared in Kolkata’s Kalighat during the final phase of West Bengal Assembly elections as BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari was confronted by TMC supporters. The clash, marked by “Joy Bangla” slogans, prompted CRPF deployment amid heightened security concerns across 142 constituencies, including the high-profile Bhabanipur seat, as authorities stressed peaceful voting and law and order enforcement.
According to reports, a group of TMC supporters gathered near the location where Suvendu Adhikari was present and raised slogans of “Joy Bangla,” triggering a charged and confrontational atmosphere. The situation developed rapidly as slogans echoed through the area, leading to a brief but tense face-off between the groups present.
As the crowd grew in number and intensity, the atmosphere became increasingly volatile. Suvendu Adhikari is reported to have sought additional deployment of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel to ensure his security and to bring the situation under control. Security forces were subsequently called in to manage the gathering and prevent further escalation.
Despite repeated appeals from the Election Commission for peaceful, free, and incident-free voting, the Kalighat episode underscored the continuing political friction between the two principal rivals, the Trinamool Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party, during one of the most closely watched phases of the electoral process in West Bengal.
The final phase of polling covers 142 assembly constituencies across the state, with Bhabanipur emerging as one of the most high-profile and politically significant seats. In view of the sensitivity of the situation, security has been significantly strengthened across vulnerable and sensitive zones, with authorities maintaining close surveillance to prevent any further disturbances.
Officials continue to emphasize strict adherence to law and order protocols to ensure smooth and peaceful voting across all districts, as West Bengal approaches the conclusion of a highly competitive and closely monitored electoral phase.
