West Bengal Polling Witnesses Strong Turnout Amid Tensions as Opposition Leader Alleges Attack Near Kalighat

West Bengal’s second phase polling sees 40% turnout by 11 AM across 142 constituencies with strong voter participation in urban and rural areas. Sporadic violence and political tension emerge as Suvendu Adhikari alleges attack near Kalighat and Bhabanipur, urging stronger central force deployment. Experts note comparatively lower violence than 2023 rural local body elections due to enhanced security presence, though tensions persist outside polling booths amid a charged political environment.

West Bengal’s second phase of polling has recorded a strong voter turnout, reaching approximately 40 percent by 11 AM across 142 assembly constituencies. Voting continues at a brisk pace in both urban and rural regions, with several areas reporting participation levels between 40 percent and 45 percent. Despite the high turnout, the electoral process has been marked by sporadic violence and heightened political tension across select locations.

Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari has alleged that he was attacked while visiting a polling booth area near Kalighat and Bhabanipur. He claimed that unidentified outsiders raised slogans of “Victory to Bengal” and attempted to obstruct his movement in the area. Following the incident, he has appealed to the Election Commission to ensure a stronger deployment of central security forces to guarantee free and fair polling across the state.

Election observers and experts have noted that while incidents of tension and isolated violence have been reported during the ongoing voting process, the overall intensity appears lower compared to the 2023 rural local body elections. Analysts attribute this relative decline in violence to the increased presence and active deployment of central security forces across sensitive regions.

Reports indicate that most of the disturbances have occurred outside polling booths rather than within them, suggesting improved booth-level security control. However, the politically charged atmosphere continues to persist in several constituencies, reflecting deep electoral polarization even amid smoother operational management at polling stations.
