South India Set for High-Speed Rail Revolution as Ashwini Vaishnaw Unveils Mega Bullet Train Network Plan
Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw unveils a major South India bullet train network connecting key cities including Amaravati, Hyderabad, Chennai, Bengaluru, Pune, and Mumbai. The project aims to drastically cut travel time, boost economic integration, upgrade rail infrastructure, and enhance regional connectivity and development.
The proposed high-speed rail network is designed to connect major urban and economic centres including Amaravati, Hyderabad, Chennai, Bengaluru, Pune, and Mumbai, creating what the minister described as a seamless high-speed transport corridor linking southern and western India. The project is positioned as a transformative infrastructure initiative aimed at accelerating business mobility, tourism, and logistics efficiency.
According to the indicative travel times shared under the proposed plan, the Amaravati to Hyderabad route would take approximately 70 minutes, while Amaravati to Chennai would be reduced to 112 minutes. The Hyderabad to Pune journey is expected to take around 1 hour and 55 minutes, Pune to Mumbai approximately 48 minutes, Chennai to Bengaluru about 73 minutes, and Hyderabad to Bengaluru nearly 2 hours and 8 minutes. These reductions are expected to significantly reduce dependence on conventional rail and road transport systems.
Vaishnaw described the initiative as the creation of a “high-speed economic region,” drawing parallels with the Mumbai–Ahmedabad bullet train project. He stated that the South Indian corridor would similarly integrate multiple cities into a unified economic zone, strengthening industrial linkages and regional development.
In addition to the bullet train proposal, the minister announced a major upgrade of the existing Kolkata–Chennai railway corridor, which will be expanded from double tracks to four lines. This enhancement is expected to enable the operation of approximately 500 additional trains, including both passenger and freight services, thereby improving connectivity to ports, tourism hubs, and industrial clusters.
Vaishnaw also confirmed that the long-pending South Coast Railway Zone will be officially notified on June 1, 2026. This administrative restructuring is expected to improve railway governance and accelerate infrastructure development across the region.
Focusing on Andhra Pradesh, the minister highlighted a substantial increase in railway investment. Budgetary allocation for the region has risen from approximately 8.86 billion rupees for the undivided Andhra Pradesh and Telangana combined to about 101.34 billion rupees for Andhra Pradesh alone. He further stated that railway projects worth more than 1.06 trillion rupees are currently under execution in the state. Additionally, 74 railway stations are being redeveloped as part of a broader modernisation drive.
Vaishnaw also emphasized sustainability and digital infrastructure development, urging industries to prioritise domestic server manufacturing in alignment with the India Artificial Intelligence mission. He underlined the importance of improving energy efficiency and reducing water consumption in data centres as India expands both its digital and transportation infrastructure footprint.
If implemented as planned, the South India bullet train network is expected to significantly transform regional mobility, strengthen economic integration, and position the region as a globally competitive high-speed infrastructure corridor.
