Dowry Harassment Case: Pune Woman Names Mother-in-Law in Final Message Before Suicide
Pune dowry harassment case takes a new turn as a woman reportedly names her mother-in-law in a message before her suicide. Police arrest her in-laws as the court orders further custodial interrogation.
Payal Akshay Zambre (35) died by suicide by hanging on November 1, allegedly after enduring harassment from her in-laws. Her husband has also been arrested in connection with the case and was remanded to police custody until Saturday. The complaint was filed by Rishikesh Pawar (31).
According to the complaint, within a few months of her marriage, Payal allegedly began facing physical and mental harassment from her in-laws, who pressured her to bring money and gold from her parental home. The complaint alleges that the continued harassment drove her to take her own life.
The arrested mother-in-law and father-in-law were produced before the court. During the hearing, the prosecution told the court that the investigation was at a preliminary stage and that the nature of the offence was serious. Investigators needed to question the accused about the alleged demands for money and gold as dowry, establish the individual roles of each accused in the harassment, and determine whether anyone had instigated Payal to die by suicide.
Public Prosecutor Amit Yadav argued that Payal had named her mother-in-law in a message sent to the complainant before her death. He submitted that the police needed to investigate the message and establish the sequence of events leading to her death. He also sought police custody of both accused, stating that their joint interrogation was necessary to clarify the sequence of events and establish the role of each person involved.
During the hearing, advocates Pushkar Patil, Rituraj Pasalkar and Akash Kamathe represented the complainant.
After considering the prosecution's arguments, First Class Judicial Magistrate Sneha Sakale observed that there was prima facie material supporting the allegations against the accused. The court stated that a detailed investigation was necessary to establish the individual roles of those involved and reconstruct the sequence of events.
The court subsequently remanded Mangal Zambre and Arvind Zambre to police custody until November 7. The investigation will focus on the alleged dowry demands, the harassment faced by Payal and the circumstances surrounding her death.
