The directive prohibits the sale, possession, display and transportation of firecrackers for sale in public places without a valid licence issued by a police officer or the state government. The restrictions have been introduced by the Mumbai Police Commissionerate to prevent public inconvenience and potential threats to public order.
The order was issued by Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations) and Executive Magistrate Akbar Pathan. An official said the directions were issued under the Maharashtra Police Act to prevent any inconvenience or danger to the public.
According to the order, "No person within the limits of Brihanmumbai shall sell, possess, display or carry firecrackers in any public place for the purpose of sale without a licence issued by a police officer or the state government."
Under the restrictions, selling firecrackers in public places without police permission is prohibited. The order also bars the possession or storage of firecrackers in public places without a valid licence, their display without the necessary permission, and their transportation for sale without an authorised licence.
An official said anyone found violating these restrictions would face legal action.
The restrictions have been imposed under Sections 33(1)(h) and 10(2) of the Maharashtra Police Act, 1951, using the powers vested in Akbar Pathan in his capacity as Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations) and Executive Magistrate.
The order applies throughout the Brihanmumbai area falling under the jurisdiction of the Mumbai Police Commissionerate. It will remain effective for one month, from November 3 to December 2.
According to officials, the restrictions are intended to ensure that activities involving firecrackers are carried out only with the required permissions. The month-long measures are aimed at maintaining public order and reducing safety risks during Diwali and other upcoming festive celebrations.
