Jupiter Wagons Secures €138 Million Business for 2,988 Freight and Auto Wagons
Jupiter Wagons has announced approximately €138 million in new business involving 2,583 Indian Railways freight wagons and 405 automobile carriers for GATX India and Chetak International, with further orders expected by March 2027.
The latest agreements include orders and commitments for Jupiter Wagons' ACT2 automobile carrier platform. GATX India, the Indian subsidiary of US-based railcar leasing company GATX, has issued a letter of intent for 270 wagons, equivalent to ten rakes. The proposed transaction is valued at approximately €20 million.
In a separate agreement, Indian logistics company Chetak International has placed a firm order for 135 ACT2 wagons, forming five rakes. The order is valued at approximately €10 million.
Together, the two agreements cover 405 automobile carriers and represent approximately €30.5 million, including taxes. However, the commitment from GATX India remains at the letter-of-intent stage and has not yet become a firm order.
The ACT2 is a double-deck automobile carrier platform developed by Jupiter Wagons to transport SUVs and other taller vehicles. Its design incorporates articulated connections between wagons and allows a single rake to carry up to 270 SUVs, increasing its capacity to transport taller passenger vehicles.
The private-sector agreements follow a separate order received by Jupiter Wagons from India's Ministry of Railways on 28 October. Valued at approximately €107 million, the order covers 2,583 open freight wagons, comprising BOXNHL and BOXNS models designed to transport bulk commodities such as coal and iron ore.
The company has not disclosed the allocation of the 2,583 wagons between the two models or provided a delivery schedule for the order.
Alongside its wagon manufacturing business, Jupiter Wagons is expanding its component production capabilities. The company is developing a wheelset manufacturing facility in Odisha and already produces bogies, couplers, brake systems and other components used in freight wagons.
Looking ahead, Jupiter Wagons expects to secure additional orders worth approximately €188 million during the fourth quarter of India's 2026/27 financial year, which ends in March 2027.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Railways has issued a separate tender for 5,800 BOBRN bulk freight wagons. However, no contract award has been announced for this tender so far.
With business spanning bulk freight transportation and specialised automobile carriers, Jupiter Wagons' latest agreements and order pipeline include both public-sector railway requirements and private-sector logistics demand.
