Gokul Dairy Election Row: Maharashtra Government Move Threatens Satej Patil Camp's Majority
Gokul Dairy's 13-seat majority was expected to secure the chairman's post for Satej Patil's camp. However, Maharashtra's decision to grant voting rights to four nominated directors has changed the political equation.
The Rajarshi Shahu Shetkari Samvichari Aghadi won 13 of the 25 seats in the Gokul election, securing a clear majority. The Mahayuti alliance won the remaining 12 seats. With this result, Satej Patil's faction was widely expected to secure the chairman's position. However, a recent state cabinet decision has created uncertainty over the leadership of the cooperative institution.
The Maharashtra government has approved a proposal to appoint four government-nominated expert directors to cooperative institutions, including Gokul, with annual business turnover exceeding Rs 3,000 crore. The cabinet has also approved granting these nominated directors voting rights. The decision could significantly alter the numbers in the election for Gokul's chairman.
Despite winning 13 seats, the Satej Patil-backed alliance is now facing difficulties in securing the chairman's post. The election could not take place because the meeting convened to elect the chairman required the presence of 14 directors to fulfil the quorum. With the government's four nominated directors set to receive voting rights, the political calculations surrounding the post could change.
The Mahayuti government's decision has drawn strong opposition from the Maha Vikas Aghadi, particularly from Congress leader Satej Patil. The opposition has questioned the move, arguing that it could undermine the mandate delivered by the members of the cooperative institution.
Reacting to the decision, Satej Patil said that 5.5 lakh farmers had given their mandate. He warned that he would not remain silent if the government attempted to disregard their decision. He said all available legal options would be pursued and that the group would take to the streets if necessary.
Patil also criticised the Mahayuti for seeking the support of two directors merely to fulfil the quorum despite his faction having secured a majority. Describing the situation as ridiculous, he questioned the alliance's approach to the numbers in the election.
Taking a sarcastic swipe at the Mahayuti, Patil said that if power was to be decided purely on the basis of numbers, his faction was short of five corporators in the municipal corporation. He suggested that the Mahayuti should support his group there as well and hand over the mayor's post to them.
Patil further alleged that the Mahayuti government had taken the decision in response to a letter sent by him. He also claimed that there had been disagreements within the Mahayuti over who would sign the letter associated with the decision.
Warning that political equations would not remain unchanged forever, the Congress leader said the balance of power could shift again in 2029. He added that the decisions being taken today would be remembered when those equations changed.
Emphasising the importance of every vote, Patil cited former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who had lost the confidence vote and his government by just one vote. He said the Mahayuti should understand the significance of a single vote in the same way.
Patil also questioned whose interests were being served by the political developments surrounding Gokul. With the Maharashtra government's approval for four nominated directors with voting rights, the contest for the chairman's post has become more complicated, despite the Satej Patil-backed alliance winning 13 of the 25 elected seats.
