Supreme Court's Salary Freeze Order Triggers Swift BMC Action in Borivali
A day after the Supreme Court ordered a salary freeze and issued a contempt notice to BMC Commissioner Ashwini Bhide, the civic body demolished 27 commercial structures on a 3,400-square-metre BEST bus depot plot in Borivali.
According to a BMC statement, the encroachments were removed from a plot located on Swami Vivekanand Road in Borivali East, in Mumbai's western suburbs.
The 3,400-square-metre plot has been reserved for a bus depot of the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) under Town Planning Scheme-II. The BMC's R-Central Ward carried out the demolition operation with the assistance of 70 employees and workers. Police personnel were also deployed to maintain security during the drive.
The action came a day after a three-judge bench of the Supreme Court issued a contempt notice to BMC Commissioner Ashwini Bhide for failing to remove encroachments from the reserved plot. The bench also ordered that her salary for November, along with the salaries of other concerned municipal officials, be withheld.
The Supreme Court had also rejected the BMC's request for an additional 30 days to comply with its earlier directions and imposed a fine of Rs 5 lakh.
The Borivali plot had been at the centre of a prolonged legal dispute between the BMC and a private developer. In August 2025, the Supreme Court directed the developer to clear the encroachments from the plot, along with the administrative building, and hand over the land to the municipal corporation.
The demolition of 27 commercial structures and the reclamation of 3,400 square metres of land mark the BMC's action following the Supreme Court's latest intervention over compliance with its earlier orders.
