Jailer 2 Box Office: Rajinikanth’s Film Crosses Rs 500 Crore in India in 15 Days

Rajinikanth’s Jailer 2 crosses Rs 500 crore gross in India within 15 days, earning Rs 765.15 crore worldwide. Despite a restricted Hindi release, the film has overtaken 2.0 to become Tamil cinema’s biggest global grosser.

Nelson Dilipkumar’s action thriller Jailer 2, starring Rajinikanth in the lead role, has crossed another major box office milestone, taking its domestic gross collection beyond Rs 500 crore within 15 days of release. The film has earned Rs 502.65 crore gross in India, with its net domestic collection standing at Rs 429.55 crore. Its worldwide gross collection has reached Rs 765.15 crore.

On its third Thursday (day 15), Jailer 2 collected Rs 5.90 crore net at the domestic box office across 10,313 shows. The original Tamil version accounted for the largest share, earning Rs 3.20 crore from 4,462 shows. The Telugu version followed with Rs 1.40 crore from 1,665 shows, while the Hindi version contributed Rs 1.10 crore from 3,972 shows. The Kannada version added Rs 20 lakh from 214 shows.

Thursday’s collection marked a slight decline compared with the film’s third Wednesday (day 14) earnings of Rs 6.55 crore across all languages. However, its cumulative domestic gross collection crossed the Rs 500 crore mark after 15 days, making Jailer 2 only the second Tamil film to achieve this milestone.

The first Tamil film to cross this domestic gross benchmark was 2.0, S Shankar’s 2018 science-fiction action epic starring Rajinikanth. The film was a sequel to Rajinikanth’s 2010 blockbuster Enthiraan and accumulated Rs 519 crore gross at the domestic box office.

However, the domestic box office performance of the two films differs significantly in terms of their Hindi-market contribution. 2.0 benefited from a wider release in the Hindi market, supported by the presence of Akshay Kumar as the chief antagonist. Jailer 2, meanwhile, faced a restricted Hindi release following disagreements with leading multiplex chains PVR INOX and Cinepolis over its four-week window before a streaming release.

The difference is reflected in their Hindi box office figures. The dubbed Hindi version of 2.0 contributed Rs 225 crore gross to its total domestic collection. In comparison, Jailer 2 has earned approximately one-fifth of that amount, collecting Rs 54.75 crore from the Hindi market within 15 days. Its release has been limited to secondary national multiplex chains and single screens across India. Consequently, most of its domestic box office business has come from the Tamil and Telugu versions.

Jailer 2’s worldwide performance, however, has set a different benchmark. The film had collected Rs 765.15 crore gross globally within 15 days of its release, making it the highest-grossing Tamil film of all time worldwide. It has surpassed 2.0, which recorded a lifetime worldwide collection of Rs 691 crore.

A sequel to Rajinikanth’s 2023 blockbuster Jailer, the film also features Ramya Krishnan, Yogi Babu, SJ Suryah, Mithun Chakraborty and Vidya Balan, among others. Produced by Sun Pictures, Jailer 2 also features cameo appearances by Mohanlal, Shivarajkumar, Jackie Shroff and Hrithik Roshan.

With its domestic gross crossing Rs 500 crore and worldwide earnings reaching Rs 765.15 crore within 15 days, Jailer 2 has established a new global box office benchmark for Tamil cinema while recording a comparatively limited contribution from its Hindi release.
