INDIA Bloc to Hold Three-Hour Public Impeachment of CEC Gyanesh Kumar on Friday
The INDIA bloc will stage a three-hour public impeachment of CEC Gyanesh Kumar in Delhi on October 30. With Meira Kumar presiding and Rahul Gandhi set to conclude the proceedings, the event precedes the Opposition's November 1 rally.
The event will begin at 4 pm, with Kharge, who is the Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the Rajya Sabha, moving the motion to impeach Kumar. Rahul Gandhi, the LoP in the Lok Sabha, will deliver the concluding remarks before the symbolic motion is put to a vote, sources said.
The structure and proceedings of the “public impeachment” were finalised during a meeting of INDIA bloc leaders at Kharge’s residence on Thursday. The meeting was attended by Congress general secretaries Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Jairam Ramesh and K C Venugopal, along with Meira Kumar, CPM MP John Brittas, Trinamool Congress MP Derek O’Brien, Samajwadi Party’s Harendra Malik and JMM’s Mahua Maja, among others.
At least 30 speakers representing 21 political parties are expected to participate in the proceedings. Sources said an invitation had also been extended to the BJD, although the party has yet to confirm whether it will take part.
Apart from political representatives, civil society members and individuals affected by the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls will also share their experiences during the event.
The symbolic impeachment is being organised ahead of the Opposition’s November 1 rally in Delhi against alleged “vote theft” and the SIR exercise. The proceedings are expected to bring together Opposition leaders, political party representatives and people affected by the electoral roll revision exercise.
