Jacob Duffy Warns Vaibhav Suryavanshi Ahead of India-New Zealand T20 Series

Jacob Duffy has warned that New Zealand's extra bounce and seam movement could challenge Vaibhav Suryavanshi in the five-match T20 series starting October 22 in Christchurch, despite the young Indian opener's impressive IPL performances.

India and New Zealand will begin their five-match T20 series in Christchurch on Thursday, October 22, with 15-year-old batting sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi attracting considerable attention ahead of the opening match. After making headlines with his explosive batting in the Indian Premier League (IPL), the young opener has entered the Indian team and established himself as a player to watch.

Suryavanshi has scored 246 runs in eight T20 Internationals so far, including two half-centuries. However, he did not get an opportunity to play a single match in India's recent home T20 series against the West Indies. His fans will now be hoping to see him make an impact during the New Zealand tour.

New Zealand fast bowler Jacob Duffy has already seen Suryavanshi bat during the IPL and understands the threat the youngster can pose when he finds his rhythm. While the opener's aggressive approach has given the New Zealand pacer reason to be cautious, Duffy believes the conditions in New Zealand will present a different challenge for the 15-year-old.

The 32-year-old Duffy was part of Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in IPL 2026. Speaking about Suryavanshi at a press conference on Tuesday, he described the young batter as an exceptionally talented player and highlighted his remarkable consistency in scoring runs at an aggressive rate.

"He is an incredibly talented player. He had a great time in the IPL. The most remarkable thing is how powerfully he hits the ball and how consistently he does it. He is batting at a strike rate of 250 in every match and misses very few opportunities," Duffy said.

Suryavanshi made his international debut in England in July 2026 but failed to make a significant impact there. However, he subsequently bounced back during India's tour of Zimbabwe, where he won the Player of the Series award. The New Zealand tour marks his first visit to the country.

Duffy believes the conditions in New Zealand will provide a stern test of Suryavanshi's abilities. The hosts have studied the young batter's game and are preparing to counter his aggressive style. The additional bounce offered by New Zealand pitches, along with seam movement, could pose a challenge for the inexperienced opener.

"This is his first tour, isn't it? I'm not entirely sure about his experience outside India; perhaps he has played in England. The conditions in New Zealand will be a little different for him, so obviously, that will be a challenge. But we have definitely analysed his game thoroughly, and we have a plan for how to approach him," Duffy said.

With New Zealand preparing specifically for Suryavanshi's attacking approach, the five-match T20 series will test how effectively the young Indian opener adapts to unfamiliar playing conditions. Duffy's assessment underlines the attention the 15-year-old has attracted ahead of the Christchurch opener.
