Shafali Verma Reprimanded by ICC After Throwing Ball in Frustration in Raipur T20I
India vice-captain Shafali Verma has been reprimanded by the ICC after throwing the ball in frustration following a dropped catch against Zimbabwe in Raipur, earning a demerit point under the Code of Conduct.
The 22-year-old was found guilty of breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel. The incident occurred during India's nine-wicket victory over Zimbabwe, when Shafali reacted in frustration after failing to complete a catch.
The incident took place in the 12th over of Zimbabwe's innings. Shafali dropped a catch offered by Chipo Mugeri-Tiripano at mid-off off the bowling of Shree Charani. Following the missed opportunity, the Indian vice-captain threw the ball to the ground.
The ICC determined that Shafali had breached Article 2.2 of its Code of Conduct, which covers the "abuse of cricket equipment or clothing, ground equipment or fixtures and fittings during an International Match," according to an ICC media release.
Along with the official reprimand, one demerit point has been added to Shafali's disciplinary record. This was her first offence within a 24-month period. Consequently, no formal hearing was required.
The charge was levelled by on-field umpires Vrinda Rathi and Gayathri Venugopalan, third umpire Anna Harris and fourth umpire Janani Narayanan.
Under the ICC Code of Conduct, Level 1 breaches carry a minimum penalty of an official reprimand. The maximum punishment includes a fine of 50 per cent of a player's match fee, along with one or two demerit points.
The disciplinary action against Shafali follows an incident during India's nine-wicket win in Raipur, with the ICC's reprimand and demerit point formally recorded under its conduct regulations.
