Playing Music on Train Speakers Could Cost You ₹5,000 Fine and Six Months in Jail

Playing music or making loud calls on train speakers could attract penalties under reported railway enforcement measures. Find out how Section 145 of the Railways Act, fines of up to ₹5,000 and possible jail terms may affect passengers.

Playing music, watching videos or making calls on a mobile phone through loudspeakers without earphones on a train could lead to penalties, including a fine of up to ₹5,000 and imprisonment of up to six months, according to the provided report on railway enforcement measures. Southern Railway has introduced stricter action against repeated noise and disturbances, following complaints from passengers about people playing music or speaking loudly on their phones.

Several complaints have reportedly emerged involving passengers using mobile phone speakers at high volume to make calls or play songs, prompting railway authorities to take stricter steps. The measures aim to address disturbances caused by excessive noise and inappropriate behaviour on trains and railway premises.

Railway authorities have appealed to passengers not to play music loudly on their mobile phones, particularly at night, and to avoid speaking at high volume. Such behaviour can disturb other passengers, especially those trying to rest during their journeys. Despite repeated appeals, some passengers have continued these practices, prompting the railway authorities to intensify efforts to raise awareness and enforce the rules.

Announcements will now be made at different railway stations to inform passengers about the restrictions and the consequences of creating disturbances. The initiative is intended to encourage passengers to maintain a quieter environment and show consideration for others travelling on the same train.

According to the report, action will be taken under Section 145 of the amended Railways Act through the Jan Vishwas Act 2026. The provision covers nuisance, loud disturbances and indecent behaviour on railway premises. Individuals creating a disturbance may face a fine of up to ₹1,000, while repeated violations could attract a penalty of up to ₹5,000.

The stricter enforcement measures highlight the railway authorities' focus on preventing noise-related complaints and maintaining a more comfortable environment for passengers. Travellers are being urged to use earphones when listening to music or watching videos and to keep phone conversations at a reasonable volume to avoid disturbing others.
