Zelensky Offers to Halt Russian Oil Refinery Strikes if Trump Supplies Patriot Missiles
Ukraine’s Zelensky urges Donald Trump to supply Patriot missiles, offering to pause Russian oil refinery strikes temporarily, as a drone attack in Kharkiv kills six people, including children, and raises fresh concerns over air defence support.
Zelensky accused Russia of targeting civilians in the attack, which struck a park near a cafe where families and children were present. He said Ukraine urgently needed air defence systems to protect its people from continued Russian drone and missile attacks.
According to Zelensky, a drone targeted people in the park, killing six and injuring 14, including six children. Among those killed was a young girl named Angelina, who was slightly older than one year and was born in August 2025. She was in a stroller when the attack occurred. Her mother, Inna, also died in hospital following the strike. An 11-year-old girl was among the other victims.
Zelensky expressed condolences to the families of those killed, saying the attacks had devastated the lives of multiple families. He appealed to the international community to support Ukraine and stressed the urgent need for air defence systems to counter Russian drones and missiles.
Zelensky also called for sanctions against Russia to remain in place for as long as Moscow continues its attacks. He urged the United States and European countries to stand with Ukraine, reiterating that his country wanted peace while Russia continued its military strikes. He said the world had the power to stop the war and that this power needed to be used.
Against this backdrop, Zelensky said Ukraine could temporarily halt attacks on Russian oil refineries if the United States helped supply Patriot missiles. The systems are used to defend against aerial attacks. He also questioned certain American decisions, saying some of Washington’s actions were difficult to understand.
The Ukrainian president alleged that the Pentagon was delaying missile deliveries under the PURL programme. He said Ukraine needed assistance without further delay to defend itself against Russian attacks.
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump’s administration has not approved the supply of interceptor missiles to Ukraine. According to a report by The Washington Post, a decision on supplying the missiles to Ukraine has not yet been made. The interceptor missiles are designed to stop incoming enemy missiles and aerial attacks, making their availability a key issue in Ukraine’s efforts to strengthen its air defences.
