Jayawardene served as Mumbai Indians' head coach from 2017 to 2022. Mark Boucher took over the role for the next two seasons before Jayawardene returned as head coach ahead of the 2025 season. Under his leadership, Mumbai Indians reached the playoffs in 2025 but finished ninth among the 10 teams in the 2026 season.
After stepping down as head coach in 2022, Jayawardene took charge as the franchise's Global Head of Performance. In this role, he oversaw Mumbai Indians' operations across leagues around the world. During his tenure, all three teams under the franchise's global setup—Mumbai Indians Women, MI New York and MI Emirates—won titles.
Jayawardene returned to the Mumbai Indians head coach position ahead of the 2025 season, replacing Mark Boucher. Following the team's ninth-place finish in 2026, the franchise is now preparing for a change in leadership, with an announcement on the new head coach expected soon.
In a statement released by Mumbai Indians, Jayawardene reflected on his long association with the franchise and expressed his gratitude to the players, coaching staff, support team and fans.
“ Mumbai Indians has been a very special part of my journey for more than a decade. The players, coaching staff, the wonderful support of One Family and, above all, the fans have made this an experience I will always cherish. Mumbai Indians will always have a special place in my heart. I wish the team great success,” Jayawardene said.
Jayawardene's departure marks a change for a franchise with which he has shared a decade-long association, including three IPL title-winning campaigns and a leadership role across its global teams. Mumbai Indians' next appointment will determine who leads the team into its next phase.
