Adinath Kothare Returns as Director With Marathi Film Gauri on Women and Justice
Adinath Kothare returns to direction with Marathi film Gauri, starring and produced by Prajakta Mali. Announced on Dussehra, the women-centric film explores injustice, the fight for justice and women's empowerment.
Speaking to MunTa, Prajakta said the film would sensitively address the injustice faced by women in everyday life. She emphasised that the story conveys the need for women to support one another and highlights how a woman herself can sometimes become the means through which another woman receives justice.
Director Adinath Kothare said presenting a film’s story honestly before audiences is his priority as a filmmaker. He described Gauri as an attempt to bring a story to Marathi cinema that has never been explored in the industry before and that puts forward an important perspective.
“Through Gauri, audiences will see a different perspective on a young girl’s struggle, relationships and justice. I consider myself fortunate to have the opportunity to present such a subject as a director,” Kothare said.
The film is produced by Narendra Hirawat, Shreyans Hirawat, Prajakta Mali and Shweta Mali. Gauri is scheduled to reach audiences next year.
Prajakta also highlighted the significance of the film’s announcement on Vijayadashami, or Dussehra. Her earlier film Phulwanti was released on Navami during Navratri, and she said the announcement of Gauri, which she is bringing forward as a producer after Phulwanti, on Dashami marks a meaningful coincidence.
Drawing a parallel with the festival’s symbolism, Prajakta recalled how the goddess killed Mahishasura on Dashami after nine days of battle. She said the sentiment behind the film was that every woman in society should confront and defeat the Mahishasura figures around her.
According to Prajakta, the film will demonstrate how courageous a decision a woman can make when she resolves to act. She added that, through her dual roles as an actress and producer, she is trying to contribute to women's empowerment.
With its focus on a woman's struggle, the importance of solidarity among women and the pursuit of justice, Gauri is set to bring these themes to Marathi cinema when it releases next year.
