Mitchell Starc’s IPL 2027 Participation in Doubt Amid Australia’s Busy Schedule

Mitchell Starc has left his IPL 2027 participation uncertain as Australia prepares for a packed international schedule, including a five-Test series in India and the 150th-anniversary Ashes Test on March 11.

Australia’s star fast bowler Mitchell Starc has cast uncertainty over his participation in the 2027 Indian Premier League (IPL), with his international commitments and workload likely to influence his decision. As franchises begin preparations for the tournament’s 20th season, attention is already turning to the player auction scheduled for December 2026.

Starc, regarded as one of the finest fast bowlers in world cricket, has also made an impact in the IPL. However, his availability for the upcoming season remains uncertain as Australia faces a demanding international schedule over the next few months, including a five-match Test series in India.

Speaking on the Code Sports podcast, Starc was asked whether he would feature in IPL 2027. He said discussions regarding his schedule were ongoing but no decision had been finalised yet. His comments have raised questions about whether he will participate in the tournament, with his fitness and workload expected to play a significant role in the decision.

Australia are scheduled to play a Test series in India next year, followed by the 150th-anniversary Ashes Test on March 11. With these commitments ahead, Starc will have to consider his international responsibilities before deciding whether to join an IPL franchise for the 2027 season.

Australia head coach Andrew McDonald has also advised players to manage their workloads carefully amid the packed international calendar. Speaking to ESPNcricinfo, McDonald acknowledged that discussions about the IPL and its timing would begin, while highlighting the tournament’s importance in T20 cricket.

“I know people will start talking about the IPL and that period. I think, from a T20 cricket perspective, the IPL is the best tournament, and having our best players playing in it also benefits their performances. You just have to find a balance between the two,” McDonald said.

He also pointed to several major international commitments in the coming period, including the potential World Test Championship final, an away Ashes series and the upcoming World Cup. These events will require careful planning to ensure players remain fit and available for their national team duties.

According to McDonald, Australia’s coaching staff and medical teams are continuously assessing players’ workloads, particularly those of fast bowlers. He stressed that providing adequate rest during lengthy tours is essential to maintaining their fitness.

With Australia’s international schedule placing considerable demands on its players, Starc’s decision on IPL 2027 will depend on how he balances franchise cricket with his commitments to the national team. His participation remains undecided as preparations for the tournament gather pace.
