Stock Market Closed on Dussehra, but MCX Evening Trading to Continue
Indian stock markets are closed for Dussehra, but MCX will resume evening trading in precious metals after a morning break. Here are the latest Sensex and Nifty closing figures and the remaining market holidays for 2026.
Trading on MCX will remain suspended from 9 am to 5 pm, while the evening session will see trading in precious metals. In contrast, equity trading will remain closed for the entire day on the occasion of the festival. (Photo: Reuters)
The market holiday comes after investors suffered significant losses during the previous trading session. On Monday, benchmark indices witnessed a sharp decline, with both the BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty ending the session deep in the red.
The 30-share BSE Sensex plunged 876.38 points to close at 73,852.90, while the 50-share NSE Nifty declined 257.20 points to settle at 22,888.95. The steep losses marked a difficult session for stock market investors ahead of the Dussehra holiday. (Photo: ITG)
With the festival break in place, three more stock market holidays remain in the 2026 calendar, according to the NSE holiday schedule. The exchanges will remain closed on November 10 for Diwali-Balipratipada and on November 24 for Prakash Guru Parv of Sri Guru Nanak Dev. The final stock market holiday of 2026 will fall on December 25 on the occasion of Christmas.
However, Diwali will also feature the traditional Muhurat Trading session, when the stock market will open for one hour despite the regular market closure for the festival. This year, Muhurat Trading will begin at 2:20 pm. Buying and selling shares during this special session is traditionally considered auspicious. (Photo: ITG)
The Dussehra holiday, the separate MCX trading schedule and the upcoming festival-related market closures are important dates for investors planning their trading activities for the remainder of 2026.
