Indonesia Stock Market Crashes 11.57%, Biggest Single-Day Fall in 28 Years

Indonesia’s stock market plunged 11.57% on Friday, its biggest single-day fall since January 1998. MSCI’s proposed market reclassification, heavy banking stock losses and a weaker currency have intensified investor concerns.

Indonesia’s stock market has suffered a historic crash, with the Jakarta Composite Index plunging 11.57% on Friday, marking its biggest single-day decline since January 1998. The massive sell-off inflicted heavy losses on investors and forced trading to be suspended temporarily as concerns over the country’s market classification intensified.

The sharp decline is largely attributed to a warning from global index provider MSCI, which has proposed reclassifying Indonesia from its current emerging market category to a ‘standalone market’ status. If the proposal is implemented, it could trigger large-scale selling by foreign investors.

The unprecedented market turmoil has raised concerns about Indonesia’s financial markets, particularly as the country faces mounting pressure from potential changes to its status in global investment indices.

Indonesia Market Suffers Biggest Fall in 28 Years

On Friday, Indonesia’s stock market opened with a decline of around 8%. Selling pressure intensified rapidly, pushing the Jakarta Composite Index down by as much as 11.57%. Trading was halted for 30 minutes as the market struggled to absorb the sharp sell-off.

The Indonesian currency also weakened against the US dollar, reaching the 18,070 level. The country’s stock market has now recorded a decline of around 40% so far this year, highlighting the scale of the ongoing downturn.

Why MSCI’s Warning Has Triggered Market Concerns

MSCI has raised questions about transparency in Indonesia’s stock market, including share ownership structures and trading arrangements. The concerns centre on how clearly and reliably information is available about who owns shares in listed companies and how those shares are bought and sold.

If MSCI downgrades Indonesia’s market status, several foreign funds investing in the country could withdraw their money. Such outflows could intensify selling pressure and put further strain on the stock market.

The proposed reclassification has therefore emerged as a major source of uncertainty for investors. With the Jakarta Composite Index recording its steepest single-day decline since January 1998 and banking stocks suffering heavy losses, the potential impact of MSCI’s decision remains a key concern for Indonesia’s financial markets.
