Uttar Pradesh Installs Lightning Detection Sensors in Five Districts to Prevent Deaths
Uttar Pradesh is installing lightning detection sensors in five districts with IITM Pune to prevent lightning-related deaths. A Rs 1.33 crore early warning system is also being installed across 32 villages in Sonbhadra.
The sensors are being installed in Etah, Meerut, Balrampur, Lakhimpur Kheri and Sonbhadra. They will help detect lightning activity rapidly and issue timely warnings, giving people sufficient time to take precautions and enabling authorities to initiate measures to prevent potential accidents.
According to the Relief Commissioner’s Office, the primary objective of the initiative is to reduce loss of life caused by lightning and improve disaster management preparedness across the state.
During the rainy season, farmers working in fields, labourers engaged in outdoor activities, villagers and livestock rearers face the greatest risk from lightning strikes. Timely alerts will help people move to safer locations when lightning threatens, while also enabling local administrations and disaster management agencies to take necessary precautionary measures.
In a further step towards protecting vulnerable communities, special arrangements are being made in Sonbhadra district to safeguard residents against lightning strikes.
A ‘Lightning Detection and Early Warning System’ is being installed in 32 villages of the Duddhi block at a cost of Rs 1.33 crore. The system aims to ensure that timely alerts reach people living in vulnerable areas, allowing them to take necessary precautions when lightning strikes are likely.
The Relief Commissioner’s Office said the state’s disaster management strategy focuses not only on providing relief after an incident but also on identifying potential threats in advance and preventing damage.
The deployment of lightning warning sensors and early warning systems is expected to strengthen weather monitoring and improve the state’s preparedness to deal with natural disasters. By enabling faster detection and timely alerts, the initiative seeks to give vulnerable communities and authorities an opportunity to take preventive action before lightning strikes cause loss of life.
