GEMS Education Unveils GR8 School, a New AI-Powered Model for Personalised Learning

GEMS Education has unveiled GR8 School, an AI-powered learning model combining personalised study, one-to-one teacher mentorship and industry expertise. With indicative annual fees ranging from USD 8,000 to USD 40,000, the first school is planned for January 2027.

GEMS Education has unveiled GR8 School, a new education model that combines hyper-personalised artificial intelligence (AI)-powered learning, one-to-one support from specially trained teachers and individualised pathways connecting students with real-world expertise and opportunities. The model is designed to give students greater control over how they learn, allowing them to progress at their own pace while retaining the guidance and human connection of teachers.

One of the oldest and largest private K-12 education providers, GEMS Education draws on almost seven decades of educational experience, more than 10,000 educators and school leaders, and graduate pathways spanning more than 2,000 universities across 71 countries. These include all eight Ivy League universities in the US and all 24 Russell Group universities and colleges in the UK. The organisation is bringing this experience and educational expertise into the development of GR8 School.

The first GR8 School is scheduled for a soft launch in January 2027. Initially, the model will operate as a “school within a school”, establishing a distinct learning pathway within existing school communities.

The unveiling on 8 October comes as Dubai’s leadership explores new approaches to education and considers how future school models can respond to changing student needs and the evolving world of work.

Since its establishment in 1959, GEMS has pioneered education in the UAE, offering international curricula across schools at a range of price points and developing new models such as GEMS School of Research and Innovation (SRI). More than 500,000 GEMS alumni have gone on to become unicorn founders, entrepreneurs, doctors, engineers, scientists, academics, creatives and leaders across industries, while graduates have progressed to leading universities worldwide.

Throughout this journey, the organisation has maintained its mission of recognising the potential in every child and evolving education to help students realise it. GR8 School represents the latest development in that approach, bringing personalised learning, teacher mentorship and practical, real-world experiences into a structured model.

The GR8 approach is built around three connected elements: hyper-personalised learning, support from world-class teachers acting as human mentors, and individualised pathways that connect education with real-world opportunities.

Under the hyper-personalised learning model, students will use AI-powered systems to work through core academic material at their own pace rather than follow a fixed timetable shared by every student. The learning system will continuously assess progress, identify areas students have mastered, highlight where additional support is needed and determine where they are ready for further challenges.

The model will also change how teachers spend their time. Real-time data generated by adaptive learning systems will enable teachers to focus more on high-impact, one-to-one support rather than delivering lessons to an entire class simultaneously. Teachers will also deliver the practical aspects of the curriculum.

Despite the increased role of technology, teachers will remain responsible for maintaining academic rigour. Their roles will also include providing inspiration, mentorship and the human connection considered central to a child’s growth.

The third element, real-world pathways, will work backwards from each student’s interests and possible future ambitions. GR8 will connect students with relevant specialists, industry experts, practitioners, projects and experiences designed to help them translate what they learn into practical capabilities.

Alongside academic study, the model will place deliberate emphasis on critical thinking, communication, teamwork, financial literacy and practical life skills. It will also seek to create direct pathways from education to further study, entrepreneurship and future employment.

Teachers, specialists, practitioners and industry experts will collectively form what GEMS calls the GR8 Learning Collective, bringing a wider network of expertise closer to students and extending learning beyond conventional classroom instruction.

GR8 School is also being designed around a more flexible learning day. Students will combine asynchronous, AI-enabled self-paced study with approximately 90 minutes to two hours of synchronous, teacher-led learning, supported by real-world experts and globally recognised specialists.

This will be complemented by a further two to three hours of enhanced enrichment programmes. These will create more time for specialist learning, projects, practical application, collaboration, creativity, sport, the arts and other areas of personal development.

GEMS intends to make GR8 available across different school segments and price points, reflecting its position that transformative education should respond to learners’ needs while giving families meaningful choice. Final fees will vary by school, market and model and will be confirmed closer to launch.

Current indicative annual fee ranges are approximately USD 8,000–10,000 for affordable offerings and USD 20,000–40,000 for premium offerings. Fees may vary by market.

The model builds on principles already embedded across GEMS schools, including personalised support, strong teacher-student relationships, character development, critical thinking and learning beyond the classroom. It brings these elements, alongside existing enrichment programmes and opportunities, together in a more focused and structured approach.

GR8 will provide families with a distinct educational option intended for students who may thrive in a more personalised, flexible and independently driven learning environment. GEMS has clarified that the model is not intended for every student, but is designed to appeal to a select group ready for greater independence, personalisation and ownership of their learning.

Sunny Varkey, Chairman and Founder of GEMS Education, said the organisation had continued to evolve over almost seven decades because the world children were growing into was constantly changing. He emphasised that the teacher had remained central to learning and development throughout that period.

“For almost seven decades, we have evolved continually because the world our children are growing into keeps evolving. Throughout that journey one thing has never changed: the teacher has remained at the heart of a child’s learning and growth. A teacher provides inspiration, encouragement, judgement and human connection. That relationship remains fundamental,” Varkey said.

He said artificial intelligence was changing how people learn and work, but argued that the response should extend beyond introducing more technology into classrooms. Instead, he said education providers needed to reconsider how learning should be designed for young people in a rapidly changing world.

“Today, artificial intelligence is changing how we learn and work, but the answer cannot simply be to put more technology into classrooms. We have to ask a bigger question: if we were designing education for young people today, knowing how rapidly the world around them is changing, what would we do differently?” he said.

Varkey described GR8 as GEMS’ response to that question, with the individual child at the centre of the model. He said the approach would consider how technology, teachers, industry experts and real-industry experiences could work together to help students achieve academically and discover their potential.

“GR8 is our answer to that question. It starts with the individual child and asks what combination of technology, great teachers, industry experts and real-industry experiences will help that young person achieve academically and discover what they could become,” he said.

He also stressed that GR8 was not intended to replace every existing educational approach, acknowledging that no single model could meet the needs of every child.

“GR8 is not for everyone, nor is it intended to be. No single model of education is right for every child. We are making this pathway available to all our families, but we expect it will appeal to a select group of students who are ready for greater independence, personalisation and ownership of their learning. For the right student, we believe it can be transformative,” Varkey said.

He added that technology could help educators understand and personalise learning, but education would continue to depend on human relationships.

“Technology can help us understand and personalise how a child learns. But education is, and will always remain, deeply human. Our ambition with GR8 is to bring many worlds together around the learner,” he said.

Varkey said the ambition was for students to leave school with strong qualifications as well as the confidence to apply their knowledge, the judgement to think independently, and the skills, experiences and relationships needed to turn their potential into possibilities.

The period leading up to the January 2027 soft launch will be used to continue developing and testing the systems underpinning GR8 School. This work will include its learning technology, academic model, teacher and guide roles, and network of specialist and industry expertise. GEMS Education said further details would be announced closer to the launch.
