Razorpay Brings Apple Pay to India for Online and In-Store Payments
Razorpay has launched Apple Pay for online and in-store payments in India, bringing Face ID, Touch ID and tokenised card credentials to eligible shoppers at thousands of brands, including Zepto, Ixigo, Indigo, Tata 1 mg and JioMart.
The launch comes as digital payments in India move towards faster authentication methods that maintain transaction security while reducing friction during checkout.
In September 2025, the RBI introduced a new framework allowing payment players to move beyond SMS-based one-time passwords (OTPs) to other secure methods of authenticating payments. The framework came into effect in April 2026, paving the way for faster checkout experiences without compromising security.
Apple Pay on Razorpay is designed to support this shift. Shoppers can select Apple Pay at checkout, review their payment and confirm the transaction within seconds using Face ID, Touch ID or their device passcode. The process eliminates the need to manually enter card details or wait for an OTP.
Security is another feature of the payment option. Apple Pay uses tokenised card credentials, ensuring that a shopper’s actual card number is never shared with the business. This provides an additional layer of protection against fraud and helps reduce the risk of chargebacks.
For businesses, the integration is intended to reduce the number of steps required to complete a purchase, potentially making the payment process more seamless. Apple Pay works across iPhone, Apple Watch, iPad, Mac and Apple Vision Pro, as well as on PCs through browsers such as Chrome and Firefox. This allows Razorpay merchants to offer the payment experience across different shopping environments.
Rahul Kothari, COO of Razorpay, said the payment process should be the easiest part of making a purchase rather than the most difficult. He noted that consumers expect quick and effortless experiences on mobile devices and at payment outlets, and that online checkout should meet the same expectations.
“Paying should be the easiest part of buying something, not the hardest. People expect every experience on their mobile devices and at payment outlets to be quick and effortless, and online payments via checkout should be no different. Apple Pay removes much of that friction, and with Razorpay, businesses don't need to rebuild anything to offer it. It fits right into the checkout they already use, backed by the reliability and scale thousands of Indian businesses count on. For merchants, that means faster checkouts and more successful payments,” Kothari said.
Businesses using Razorpay Standard Checkout can enable Apple Pay without building and maintaining a separate checkout flow, subject to enablement requirements. Razorpay securely routes transactions across Apple Pay, card networks and issuing banks, and processes the domestic payment once it has been authorised by the shopper.
The launch extends Razorpay’s existing support for international transactions through Apple Pay to domestic payments in India, expanding the payment options available to businesses through a single payments infrastructure.
Established in 2014 by IIT Roorkee alumni Shashank Kumar and Harshil Mathur, Razorpay is an omnichannel payments platform that aims to help Indian businesses manage their payment and banking requirements through technology-driven solutions. The company develops payment solutions for businesses, supported by investments from a few angel investors who have backed its mission to simplify payments and business banking.
With Apple Pay now available for domestic online and in-store transactions through Razorpay, businesses can offer eligible shoppers an additional way to authenticate and complete payments while retaining their existing checkout infrastructure, subject to the platform’s enablement requirements.
